The Rebirth of Resident Evil Maybe

User Rating: 9 | Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (Deluxe Edition) PS3

Review Edited for accuracy, typo and to include Raid Mode, and Bonus Story Modes.

Finally Capcom has made a Resident Evil sequel worthy of the franchise. Resident Evil Revelations 2 was a surprisingly enjoyable game.

Each Episode has two "chapters."You start off playing as Claire Redfield and Barry Burton's daughter, Moira Burton. They awake in what seems to be a prison facility, with no weapons wearing strange bracelets with colored lights. They must figure out how to escape and what is going on. A strange woman laughs and taunts your characters throughout their adventure. Who is she? In the episodes you can switch between Claire and Moira. Moira can use a flashlight and discover objects not seen by Claire, can blind enemies with it and uses a crowbar to pry and as a melee weapon. Clair on the other hand uses the arsenal of guns.

In "chapter 2" of each episode you play as Barry Burton who is looking for his daughter Moira, and finds a little girl, Natalia, who aids him on his way. You can also switch from Barry to Natalia who can use her "second sigh" to sense enemies in other rooms, or around corners. Natalia can also crawl into small holes and find objects Barry doesn't see. Natalia's only weapon is a brick, so Barry has to take care of her. They start off as Barry approaches in a boat, where the little girl happens to be standing.

I found the guns easy to use, enemies seemed to be set at an appropriate difficulty level with respect to the difficulty of the game chosen. You will also be able to mix herbs and combine some objects for secondary weapons. You can pass objects to and from your partner character. Combining their talents and special abilities is essential to survival in this game.

The game lacks an online co-op play for story mode at this time but split screen is available at his time.

At first I wasn't sure if having a second character for each "chapter" would be irritating or not, but they turned out to be quite helpful. The scenes were mysterious and spooky and the enemies startled me. It's about time Capcom. This game is the best Resident Evil since Resident Evil 3. Modern and up to date controls and an inventory like it should have. This review does not include raid mode. Now the maybe.... part. I do NOT like that this game comes out incomplete as an episode thing. Just tacky and I took off an entire point for that. In this case I do not think it was for monetary purposes, however I don't have a desire in the future to buy my games in pieces so I sure hope Capcom does not make a habit of it. The end of episode 1 has a cliff hanger, clearly intentional, and I am excited to play the next episode.

Raid Mode

Raid mode now has online co-ply ability this is a plus but I will not adjust the score because of the above mentioned point cut. Raid mode in RER2 is better than RER1, however it does have some irritating quirks I don't like. 1st I find it hard to understand why with the medals earned one would be punished (by losing a medal) for using a green herb but using a life is acceptable? Seems stupid to me, especially when a great many of the player skills are focused on green herb usage and proficiency. I also do not like the fact that one has either the option of destroying their gun to get back parts they added to it, or destroy the parts to keep the gun. Why not just let us keep both? The most annoying aspect of this raid mode is the fact whoever designed the level system for the gauntlets must have been drunk. There are four gauntlets starting in basically easy and gradually getting harder, but there are also gauntlet "levels" 1-9. So I may be in easy gauntlet level 2 and need to be level 10 but then in level 4 need to be 40, then in hard gauntlet level 1 I may only need to be level 20 and it's weird and spastic and makes no logical sense. I would have preferred that the level system been mathematically logical and had gone straight down each gauntlet, getting harder with each level and each gauntlet difficulty. For those who aren't grasping what I'm saying just play it and you'll see what I mean.

As a bonus there are two extra-story episodes. One Called "The Struggle" and the other "Little Miss." In little Miss you play as Natalia and Natalia's odd double and basically have to follow the instructions of Natalia's bear Lotty and sneak around monsters to the end. I personally played it for the extra story but didn't care much for it. I found it boring and more confusing than anything.

In The Struggle Moira is being helped by a guy from the game named Evgeny. Moira has to help him hunt and shoot monsters. This one was again disappointing it was kinda boring and parts were weird and just didn't fulfill my expectations.
