The remaster of the "Resident Evil" remake is terrific.

The Nintendo GameCube's 2002 remake of "Resident Evil" was even better than the original. A slick and scary reimagining of the PlayStation classic, it was the best entry in the series until "Resident Evil 4" came along in 2005. Surprisingly though, the remake has aged better than RE 4 has. Now over 14 years old, it has certainly stood the test of time. The HD version is a visually gorgeous port that has changed nothing to the game, but it does include a few new options. An alternative control scheme has been added as well as widescreen support.

If you've never played "Resident Evil" before, than this remaster is the definitive way to experience it. Dismissing the campy elements of the original 1996 game, it increases the creep factor by adding eerie landscapes and plenty of jump scares. This isn't an action-packed game like "The Evil Within", but a slow-paced survival horror title. A quick death can occur in an instant due to puzzles that may spring a booby trap. Additionally, you may unknowingly walk into a room containing a boss that can kill you quickly. This is one of those games that will encourage players to save every chance they get.

Overall, this game is a classic that set the standard for the genre. It plays out differently depending on which character you choose (Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield) including the ending. The slow pace and constant loading may turn some players off, but if you're a fan of horror games, you should enjoy the experience. I'd rate this HD remaster with an 8.5 out of 10.
