With a great concept you would think that this game would be great. But RE:ORC fails to even be decent.

User Rating: 5 | Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City PS3
Story: The story takes place between RE 2 and 3. Six Umbrella operatives are sent into Raccoon city to destroy any evidence that Umbrella was the cause of the zombie outbreak . Instead of playing as familiar characters such as Leon or Chris, this game puts you into the boots of the bad guys and sounds like a nice change of pace but that is far from the truth. What the story fails in is that there is a huge lack of it. You would think playing as Umbrella would bring a whole new different spin on the story but that is far from what happens, with few cutscenes, terrible narrative and not to mention boring characters, and you got a story that is lackluster to say the least. There are six different characters in the game and none have any real compelling features about them and are so over all not interesting. There is very little narrative and when it is there it just doesn't come off good at all. What I described in the first two sentences pretty much sum up the entire story because there are few twists and turns, in this very lackluster story.

Graphics: RE 4 and 5 amazed me with how great the graphics were and really pushed their respected consoles to the max. This game however is far from triple A standard. I will say that I really like the design for all the Umbrella operatives, I think they look pretty bad ass and just down right cool looking. There is some decent voice work and some of the other sound effects like the zombies sound fine enough. What isn't so great is pretty much the raw power of the over all graphics themselves. The explostions look really bad and not powerful at all, the guns sound like toys, the animations are laughable at best and this game looks like it could have come out a couple of years ago and would still look dated. The graphics are very average at best and just really doesn't make sense how they could just slack off on this one.

Gameplay: Right now RE:ORC is 0-2 but here is where it all counts, the gameplay, can this save this game? Well... not really. What the game gets right is that for the first time you can move and shoot and that is pretty much the only real improvement that this game makes over the last games. And I will say that it can be fun mowing down zombies with a machine gun and to feel poweful where as in most zombie games you are just trying to survive. What the game doesn't get right is everything that makes a RE game fun. If you thought RE 5 was action orientated, well than you haven't seen nothing yet, although I knew ahead of time this wasn't gonna be a survival horror game to begin with so there is nothing at fault their. Saying this also means that the game has almost no atmosphere which is terrible for a RE game. The game works like any other third person shooter and it also employs a cover system which could be better. There is no button you press to go into cover and this can be annoying when you are being shot at and your character won't take cover. The shooting in the game, while functional, feels a little off. It's not terrible but it could be a lot better. Now a really big fault the game has is the AI for both enemies and allies. The zombies act like they should and just attack you like crazy which is fine, if not annoying, however some of the enemies like the hunters and lurkers are just plain ridiculous because they are relentless and take a million hits to kill. Even enemies such as military soldiers can take a couple of clips to kill. Next is your ally AI which is horrible. They barely hit their targets, they get shot at all the time, and they barely help you at all. Now your all thinking "It's suppose to be a multiplayer game, play online" and I have tried that and nothing came up. Speaking of which I would have loved to try the multiplayer, because I heard it was much better, but it is pretty much dead by this point and no one will play it. Like I said, there are six characters to play as but they all feel and play the same and don't have any differences. Sure they have special abilities, that you have to unlock which is a terrible idea, you can also unlock new guns and equpment too which is a nice idea but not worth playing for to unlock anything good. Now don't get me wrong you can have some mindless fun just mowing down zombies with machine guns, but everything else just begs to be better.

Over all:

Story: 4 Even with its great concept, this game's story just fails on almost every level.

Graphics: 5 Very average at best and dosen't even come near to living up to the previous games.

Gameplay: 6 While it can be mindless fun for some, it just begs to be better.

Enjoyment: 5 I can recall wanting the pre-order this a little while ago, good thing I didn't, and I was just really let down by what could have been a great game.

Final Score:5
