The gore factor is a disappointment but the polish and overall improvements are impressive

When I first played Code Veronica X on the Playstation 2, I found this title to be somewhat disappointing due to the fact that I had been playing graphically superior games that were being released at the same time. Though after playing the Dreamcast version and many other survival horror titles of the early 2000s; I have been truly able to appreciate it for the fact that it is the most visually impressive and story driven classic survival horror game bar none.

In this installment you begin the game as Claire Redfield, the heroine from RE2 in her continued search for her brother Chris (the hero From RE1). The beautiful and action packed opening cinematic clip sets the game up with you on an Island base where an outbreak is eminent. Thus begins your adventure. Throughout the game you must be very resourceful as ammunition is more scarce than ever before and deadly new monster variants are more quick and tend to have more stamina than in previous installments. Luckily you have a few new tricks of your own including duel aiming with two handed weapon variants and the quick 180 turn carried over from RE3.

This game is more polished and improved in many other ways as well. Most notably perhaps are the newly implemented 3D modeled environments as opposed to the two-dimensional backdrops from the first three games. Also as mentioned in Gamespots review the puzzles are based in scenarios that make a lot more sense to the context. i.e. using chemicals to melt things and machinery to move heavy obstacles. These brain teasers are quite rewarding to solve. A highlight of Code Veronica is the new and exciting bosses all of which are quite challenging if you aren't quick on your toes and appropriately equipped.

As for the negatives I can come up with: Many of the pet-peeves from the original games are still prevalent here (i.e. the tank controls and the limiting ink ribbon save system). Also they have dubbed down the gore factor that made the first three games appealing to the violence junkies. You are no longer able to decapitate foes or blow them in half with a shotgun.

With that said the main story is phenomenal and there are a number of well-placed scares that the series is known. These features will ensure that you have a thrilling experience while playing this game. I hope you found this review helpful. Thanks for reading.
