Without a doubt, Resident Evil 4 is the most intense game I’ve ever played. The praise this game has received is not undeserved. The game moves seamlessly throughout and manages to keep its edge and intensity - even on those occasions where you backtrack through areas through which you’ve already fought. The atmosphere this game creates is so immersive, and deliciously tense and creepy, I found myself needing to take a break just to relax my nerves and shake off the stress. Within minutes I was craving more Resident Evil 4. I have enjoyed the previous titles in the series, but no other RE game has grabbed my attention and dominated my game time like RE4. The weapons are balanced and responsive, their effects gorgeously gory, and the ability to switch them on the fly in the inventory can be a real help, since bad guys will gang up on you in a hurry. The environments in the game are varied, but all of them eerie and alluring. Whether to enjoy the stunning graphics or to avoid sudden and brutal death during a cutscene, there isn’t a moment you’ll want to take your eyes off the screen. Each of the bosses is tough as nails (the AI is excellent and the bosses' attacks can vary, throwing in some lethal surprises), but finding their weakness (which usually takes a couple of self-sacrifices on Leon's part) is engaging and requires a good amount of focus. This is a game that will challenge your faculties and maybe leave you a little shaky when you’re done – first from the adrenaline, then from the withdrawal from and desire to play such a spectacular game. Resident Evil 4 also boasts a surprising amount of replay value, since even a little ways into the game I found myself wanting to play the first parts over again, to vary it up: use this weapon here, hide here or stand and fight there, and so on. It’s a game I’m definitely looking forward to starting again. Once the shaking subsides.
