A solid Resident Evil experience

Resident Evil 2 was one of 2019's best games, as well as one of the best video game remakes of all time. It's embracing of the original with a modern twist won over new and old fans alike. This year's Resident Evil 3 remake was aiming to follow suit, and while it was a fantastic game, it doesn't compare to last years remake.

The story was more fast paced, thrilling, and linear compared to Resident Evil 2. It's shorter, and leaves a lot out of the original, and that'll rub some fans the wrong way, but I thought the modern twist was still very well done. I loved the characters, especially Jill and Carlos, the writing and overall atmosphere was on par with RE2.

Resident Evil 3 in comparison with 2 isn't quite as scary, but it still embraces the survival horror elements of the series. The atmosphere is still intense and unnerving, and the enemies are still scary, but the action-inspired direction I mentioned before slightly outweighs the horror element, but not by much. We still got the iconic zombies, and some new enemies in the mix.

Nemesis was a shining point of the game for me, just as Mr. X was in RE2. In comparison Nemesis is as much of a stalker type, instead mostly showing up in cinematic cut scenes and boss battles. Even so he was an iconic character in the game, as he was meant to be.

Graphically the game is still beautiful, and gameplay-wise it's still very similar to RE2. There's still a emphasis on item conservation, exploration, and puzzle solving, though there isn't nearly as many puzzles in this game. The levels are well done, the combat is fun, and there's still a significant challenge to the game. I also enjoy the elemental ways to deal with enemies, like explosive canisters or electrical outlets. It adds an extra bit of immersion to the game. All things considered most people will still appreciate and love the gameplay.

All in all I highly enjoyed Resident Evil 3. Like I said, it doesn't measure up to RE2 for me, but it's still a solid game. It's a shame it left so much out of the original game, but as a modern experience, I think they did a good job.
