A lacklusted 3rd person shooter in a boring gameworld - with chronic explosions.

Let's be honest, there are only a handful of promising games that are being released this summer. We, as the gamers of the world, have wait 'til Fall to get the cream of the crop of this years games like Uncharted 2, Bioshock 2, Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, and many many others. So, with that being said, it's important to look at the hyped up titles that -are- coming out this summer. Red Faction: Guerilla has been one of the more hyped up titles. Upon playing this game, I felt strikingly disappointed, however, and I'll soon tell you why.

RF:G begins like many other action games, with a horrible tragedy occuring at the beginning. You are then released into the open world where you're free to explore, well sort of. The problem is, there's really not that much to explore. The gameworld is extremely dull and there's really no incentive to go and adventure around. There are no awesome landforms, only the boring red sand. Next, the actual gameplay felt extremely similar to a previous gen game I fondly remember known as Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. The guns available aren't really too entertaining to kill the enemy with, either. The missions are, for the most part varied; however, I felt as though I had to "Rambo" a lot of the time which created an uncompelling experience, as other members of your faction group are supposed to actively help you. Sandbox games are realizing that they must create a vivid, living world with plenty for the gamer to engage their time in doing, and unfortunately, RF:G does -not- provide these provisions. One last small disappointment for me were the unoriginal and boring achievements offered for this title - games should have unique achievements... this one did not.

In the end, I was disappointed with RF:G because I felt like it wasn't nearly as good as the hype made it out to be. Though the explosions and destruction power was fun at times, a game should not be based around destroying things as one of its primary strengths. I would definently recommend renting this title before buying it.
