Undead Nightmare is a great excuse to go back to Red Dead Redemption, and provides plenty of thrills, gore and humour.

The somewhat familiar theme of a zombie apocalypse is brought to a refreshing new setting in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and I'm pleased to say that this DLC provides not only an enjoyable new single player experience, but an excellent online cooperative mode to compliment it.

The first thing that needs to be said about this DLC is that isn't oozing the quality of the Red Dead Redemption single player, nor is it massively varied or lengthy, but for the most part it is an absolute blast to play, features plenty of great action, amusing cut scenes and heaps of good fun.

The only gripes that could be had with regards to Undead Nightmare's single player mode are its general lack of variety and slightly rough edges. While some of the main missions are very good fun, too many seem to be fetch missions put in to pad the game out, and the majority of the side missions consist of saving and protecting towns across the map from the undead.

These side missions are good fun, but are exactly the same for each town, with the process being to either supply the remaining townsfolk with ammunition and take a few undead down yourself, or for you to simply keep shooting until every last zombie has been dealt with.

The moments that really make the single player shine here are mostly found in the amusing plot and cast of characters, (which include some familiar faces from the original storyline, and a couple of new ones) and the great new weapons you are given to dispatch your flesh hungry foes such as the ridiculously powerful blunderbuss, bottles of holy water and a torch for you to start undead barbecues.

The single player isn't particularly long, clocking in very comfortably under 5 hours, if you take it at a steady pace, but when you consider the addition of the new 'Undead Overrun' mode in to the mix as well as nice additions such as extra multiplayer characters and titles, Undead Nightmare does give you a feeling of bang for your buck.

Undead Overrun is essentially a 'horde' mode for Red Dead, which sees you and up to a further three teammates fight off wave after wave of undead nasties while attempting to rack up the points and try to survive. There's nothing complicated about this mode aside from the coffins that appear at the beginning of a new wave, that allows you and your team to stock up on more ammo, provided you can reach it without being nibbled to death on the way there. An option for another team to play as the undead would have been interesting, and the inclusion of an undead free roam would have been nice, but Undead Overrun is definitely a great addition to Red Dead Redemptions already healthy stock of online multiplayer modes.

Undead Nightmare is quite simply a great reason to go back to Red Dead Redemption, it's definitely got a couple flaws, and the aforementioned extra scope that could have been given to the multiplayer would have been great, but overall this is definitely a piece of DLC that provides its pound in flesh of content and is certainly worth digging up and hogtieing to your consoles hard drive.
