What a great game. I really don't start reviews like that except when it truly deserves it and this was my first game I got with my PS4 and it is truly a gem..
The story like most platformers is rather basic. In reality there is no plot and that is fine because games like these don't need a story. The world and setting it is taken place in is very light hearted and goofy. It almost reminded me of a pixar film actually. Everything about the world is breathing and organic.
The graphics are outstanding. The art design is fantastic and everything is well animated and the sprites are very well detailed. The graphics truly show what this generation is capable of and sure I know the graphics are actually last gen but if last gen is that good it makes me anticipate what a future Rayman game could look like. Everything was very smooth and it felt like a constant 60 FPS. There was no slow down at all and everything was instant.
The gameplay was fun. It can be a difficult game but thankfully the series has a very generous checkpoint system. There are also unlimited continues, so sure it may feel difficult as a NES game was but with the check point system I am confident that anyone could eventually beat this game. Even if you're terrible at platformers, give it a go. The game took me about 8 hours to finish but that was just the required missions. There are plenty of side missions to do and challenges. There are five worlds in all plus a secret world to play through if you can meet the requirement to do so, it's not impossible but time consuming to collect everything to get to that point.
With that being said, unless you go through each level and collect most of all the important items you won't be able to finish the game until you meet the requirement. It might seem like a con to some, especially those who want to just speed through the game but it does encourage exploration and there are plenty of secret areas. At first it annoyed me but when I went to replay some of the missions to beat the game, I saw things I didn't see before and I appreciated it. If I were to say anything against this game.. That would be my only complaint but it's a rather minor one at that.
The controls are very fluid and work right. They're not slippery at all and seem to harken to the days of excellent platformers. You will probably fail a lot but thanks to the checkpoint system it's not an issue and I felt when I died in the game it was my fault and not the game's controls. It just takes a bit of patience but the reward is there. Also the PS4 version has no load times except for the start of the game. It is a very fluid game.
The sound design is fantastic. Goofy sounding voices and excellent music makes this a hit.
All and all this game is fantastic and a must own. No matter what console you have it on, pick this one up if you like fun games.

Just because I gave the score a 10 doesn't mean it's perfect. There can always be improvements but as it stands it is a must own and even if you dislike the genre, you'd owe it to yourself to check it out.
