Rampage 2: Universal Tour for the GBC is a bad version of an already mediocre game

I've heard it said before that if you've played one Rampage game, you've played them all. While I wouldn't go as far as to say this is 100% accurate, it's not at all far from the truth. This game franchise has had you playing as a monster trying to destroy random cities since its very beginning, and Rampage 2: Universal Tour for the Game Boy Color is no exception. The core gameplay is definitely in-tact, repetitive level design and all, and die-hard fans of the series looking for something to do on a bus ride may want to check out this game - otherwise, it's not worth wasting your time.

If you've never played Rampage before, the core gameplay is basically a 2-D side scroller where you have to destroy buildings in various different cities to move on to the next city. I always thought the gameplay was far too repetitive and linear to play on a console, but as an arcade game it can be pretty fun. Anyway, this Game Boy Color title is basically that same idea transferred to a portable game system. Unfortunately, Rampage fares even worse as a Game Boy game than it does as a console title in my opinion - the environments are boring, the controls are unresponsive, and every single level is virtually the same. Playing more than ten of these levels is downright moronic, and beating this game (like I did for the sake of this review) just feels like a massive waste of time. The game never really gets any more challenging, and after you've played the first five levels, you've literally played them all. While it's occasionally satisfying to knock down buildings and eat random civilians to give your health a boost, the novelty wears off pretty quickly.

I'm not the biggest Rampage fan in the world, but I sense that Rampage 2: Universal Tour for the GBC was really just a lazy attempt to cash in on the handheld gaming market, rather than create a truly good experience. This is a repetitive waste of time that is only recommended to the most die-hard of Rampage fans, and even their patience should be tested.
