Had (and still has) potential, but needs better execution (and less lag).

User Rating: 7.8 | Rakion PC
A new game by the developers of GunBound, Softnyx has joined the ranks of free online RPG's out there with Rakion. But it is good? Well, to put it bluntly: yes, but it could be better.

Gameplay: Rakion is not the kind of game you'd think it is at first glance. Many people would look at it and say : "Oh, that's just another WoW wannabe. Screw that.". Those people are wrong. In Rakion, you start with a character, leveling up, gaining experience, getting new weapons and such. However, 1) You have a predisposed a number of special moves and 2) The game focuses ENTIRELY on deathmatch type games. While it's a good concept (evidently borrowed from the strangely popular GunBound), basing a game like this on deathmatch really hurts its potential enormously. There's no story, no plot, no quests, just menial expe-gainiing matches, time, after time, after time, after time again. The tedium is sometimes unbearable, which sometimes makes you want to shove your mouse into your computer's hard drive just to see what kind of sound it makes.

Graphics: Not exactly "Wow, this is just like WoW" level, but exceptionally good for a F2P game of this type.

Sound: Fairly loopy. The game has only, what, four songs? Slashes and spells are what you'd come to expect from all the fantasy games in the world. Nothing too new here, just average.

Tilt: Maybe I'm being too generous here, but I think this game has potential. I kinda like it, and since it's better than _a lot_ of other games I've played, it's good.

Value: It's above-average. Normally that's not saying much, but it's good. It has tons and tons and tons of untapped potential, and if the guys at Softnyx realize that and give this game a major overhaul (complete with an engaging story and some quests and the like), it might, just might, join the ranks of the F2P games that totally pwn, like Silkroad. But for now, I'll just have to wait and see.
