Innovative and challenging. One of the first true adventure games.

By modern standards, this game would be considered a flop. The number one comment would be that it is too hard; closely followed by poor graphics. All positive comments come from anyone who beat the game during the Atari 2600 era. Like Superman and Adventure!, ROTLA was a change from the arcade style games for the Atari. What separated ROTLA from the other adventure games was that it introduced a time element. Certain items and tasks could only be obtained during 'windows' of time. These windows provided a bit of extra effort to complete the necessary task. ROTLA required the player to use both controllers, which gave the game a bit of a black eye. I guess was I beat up enough to enjoy the pain as using the two controllers left me with one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had in gaming. Trying to put one controller down and trying to switch to the other as quick as possible was daunting at the time, but looking back it was a breath of fresh air especially since today's consoles just add another button or control stick on the controller.

The completion screen was neat too. Due to how many lives you lost or other misc. activities, you were given a 'score' on how good you completed the game. Even after beating the game, you wanted to play again to get a better score, which gave the game some replay value.

The two controllers, time element, final score and difficulty make ROTLA a very unique and innovative game for its time. It is still one of my favorite games I've ever played. Besides, what game isn't good that has a whip?
