Classic Id fashion. Feels like Fallout 3 with a heavy infusion of quakeage.

First things first; this is a fantastic looking game. Everything in this game looks amazing. The environments are superbly detailed and rich with color and nuance. The character models look terrific too. Their faces are vibrant and full of movement and their mouths actually sync up with the dialogue(woah). The gory action is full of bloody explosions and just good old fashioned mayhem. Once again we find ourselves in a post apocalyptic setting. I don't mind that this is an overused concept because its probably my favorite setting for a game. Rage isn't as bleak and gritty as Fallout 3, but its not as cartoonish and stylized as Borderlands. Rage stradles between those extremes to near perfection. There is plenty of open land to traverse and there are a number of environments to explore and they are all unique in some way or another. The action in Rage feels old school and straight forward. There are plenty of guns to choose from(the standard fare) and lots of different ammo styles. The best thing is the way the guns feel. Everything is satisfying to shoot. The shotgun hurls your enemies back powerfully. The automatic smg peppers the enemies with little devastating holes. Blood splatters, limbs fly off, heads exploded, pieces of armor break, and enemies scramble for their lives. The attention to detail in the combat is first rate. The controls are always responsive and keep things flowing. The graphics never stuttered or faltered during my playthrough. Ok, I saw the rare pop-in or muddying of textures, but it was very very minimal. The music was just ok. It didn't really stand out to me. All of the sound effects were top notch though. The story was a little weak, but I don't fault it for that too much because this is a fairly linear fps action game. You are an ark survivor from the past and you awaken to the derelict future. You begin helping the locals with some of their problems and next thing you know you are embroiled in a project to overthrow the "authority." The story moves along, you do a few side missions, you kill a few bosses and voila' its over. The final encounter is a little bit of a letdown(not the over the top boss you might expect). The campaign is a solid 12-14 hours long which is nice. The difficulty is standard. The autosave function is a little lax. It saves very sparsely which can lead to frustrating save loss if you don't save manually on a regular basis. This happened to me a couple of times, but I was pretty dilligent with my saving overall. The game never glitched or crashed.

Summary: Very satisfying first person shooter that harkens back to the olden days a little bit. Great visuals, great action, not perfect, but darn good.
