Too short, based on Casino Royale the most, skips most scenes from the movies and fails to give the 007 feeling

User Rating: 5.5 | 007: Quantum of Solace PS3
Since Rare released the now legendary Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64, every developer (mainly EA) had the task to make a game, that could live up to Goldeneye. The closest they ever came to that, was Everything or Nothing from 2004, that actually felt like a James Bond movie and a pretty good one too. Now, it's Activision's time to make a James Bond game.

Story
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game covers both Casino Royale & the recently Quantum of Solace. Casino Royale has James going after Le Chiffre and Quantum of Solace has James going after a group called Quantum. The story is horribly represented in the game, there's several scenes from the movies skipped, and some of them has even been toned down, there's major scenes that's been skipped as well, some characters has been excluded and the villains only appear briefly before they die. It doesn't help much either, that dispite the name "Quantum of Solace," the game actually covers most of Casino Royale, which makes no sense. The story is mostly told during the loading times between each level, while they look kinda cool, it's not a great way, since it skips over most things from the movies. The only good thing about the story is, that it at least leads up to the 3rd Bond movie, scheduled for 2010.

Gameplay
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The gameplay is based on the Call of Duty 4 Engine, so playing the game feels a lot like Call of Duty 4, except with a few additions, there's a cover system, similar to that found in Gears of War, it works well, just walk up to a obstacle and press X and James goes into hiding, but perhaps it works too well, hiding behind cover makes it easy to get a headshot and avoid getting hit, it even makes the harder difficulties a bit easier, though it still provides challenges. And then there's quick time events, mostly they happen when you try to take down a enemy, or when your in one of the few quick time events, which acts like some of the fights from the movies, at least they got those right. Problem is, the quick time events are overused quite a lot and dispite what the developers promised, you do not feel like James Bond at all. Actually, you don't get enough time to either, the game only takes 4 hours to finish, and there's not much replay value either unless you like trophies. I actually never thought I'd complain about this, but where's the driving stages? Where's the sections where you have to sneak only? Hell they could have even had thrown in a poker mini game, The World Is Not Enough game did it and it worked decent, so why not one here? The game does very little to make you feel like James Bond and the 15 levels, are all completed in minutes.

The multiplayer can't even make up for it, it doesn't feel rewarding, there's no perks (which is a bit surprising, considering it's based on the Call of Duty 4 engine), and even the Bond Versus mode, where everyone has to chase the player that's playing as Bond doesn't even feel rewarding, unless ya like trophies.

Graphics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the Call of duty 4 engine, you'd expect good graphics right? Well Quantum of Solace don't have that, the environments looks ok, but certainly could look better, character models animate nicely, but they don't exactly look good either. The cut-scenes can't even run smoothly and their faced with anti-analising issues.

Sound
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The voice acting, is somewhat decent, most of the cast (Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Eva Green, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric & Mads Mikkelsen) from the movies are here, with a few exceptions because of characters that's been excluded, so you get almost the whole cast, reprising their roles, though Jesper Christensen who plays Mr. White in the movies, is missing. The music, is decent and for some strange reason, the game even has it's own Bond theme, though it sounds better than the one found in the movie.

Overall
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quantum of Solace can be fun to play and the quick time events at least look pretty, but the story serves only as spoilers for people who never saw Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace, the game is rushed and it's easy to see by the short length, graphics and by the story. Priced at $60 and with a collectors edition that is a bit more expensive, the game clearly is not worth it, even with it's multiplayer. Give it a rent, because it can still be fun, but it's too short for $60. Sorry James, the wait continues.
