User Rating: 4.8 | Quake III Revolution PS2
Id Software has been putting out a lot of content for the Quake franchise in these days. Quake I of course, followed by Quake II obviously, then Quake III Arena, which was the most popular o the Quakes. Only about half a year after Arena's release, Id software made a great team based expansion to Arena, called Team Arena. Now on the PS2, Id tries to expand their Quake III content further. Unfortunately the PS2, although a good system, does not have what sparks Quake III Arena. ONLINE PLAY!

Quake III Revolution for the PS2 actually tries to make the single player factor of the game into the main attraction. You are given a choice between 3 main character's to play the game with. All 3 models are insignificant characters you can choose for your avatar in the original Quake III. Revolution's single player is just like a game of multi player but with bots on easy difficulty. Most of the maps are recycled from Quake III Arena. Some of the matches in the single player aren't half bad. There's a new type of mode during the single player where you defeat one opponent, then take a portal to the next, until you have killed them all, and the level ends. The last battle of the single player is somewhat worth it, but not entirely. You get to fight an actually hard opponent, but he is in fact too hard. You were facing a cakewalk in the matches before, now you have to take on your entire life of work in just 5 minutes. Once you beat him, you gain ultimately nothing but a new level in multi player (Which is a useless factor of the game anyways) It seems all the weapons of the game have been modified. The lightning gun fires faster than ever now, with no lag, and is an instant killing machine, but eats ammo like Sally Struthers eats twinkies. The plasma gun might as well be the BFG10k which almost has no purpose in the game. I must point that out. You only use the BFG10k in the single player on the last level. You can use it in multi player, but only on one CTF map, and in 1 weapon mode. The favorable rail gun in Quake III Arena, is now the noob cannon. The weapon has a little assistance when firing it. If your target is a few inches away from the crosshair, the gun will make the difference and hit him anyways, killing him with one shot. Not only has Quake III's gameplay gone down the tube with revolution, but thousands of technical problems arise within the game. The sound design has gone pathetic. The shotgun sounds horrible compared to how it sounded on the PC. Now it sounds like a guy hitting a piece of wood with a hammer when you fire it. The plasma gun makes your ears bleed. Orbb the eyeball is making more frantic pain remarks than ever. It seems the quality of all the sounds have just gone straight down. Some characters don't even make sounds when you face them now. The visuals are bad as well. There is a greatly smaller level of detail in every gun. Not to mention, the screen cannot fit much of the gun at all onto itself. The frame rate has dropped dramatically. If you play multiplayer with 4 friends, it wont be worth it, because everything will be chunky/ laggy/ painful to watch. I probably should mention, the game has less than half the actual content of the original Quake III. Sure all the weapons are here, and even those from Team Arena. but there is only about 1/8 of the maps. No decent teamplay. No mods. Nothing truly good. The last thing I should mention is the incredibly long load times. They are about 5 minutes each just to load a little 5 minute mult iplayer skirmish. Quake III Revolution is Id getting up and saying, "We're sorry! Quake III was good, but it didn't need to go this far!" Never again Id, never again.
