Radical Entertainment's greatest accomplishments has finally gotten a chance to taste the glory as it has been released to the public. In [PROTOTYPE 2], you play as Sgt. James Heller, a former family man who once served his country in the military but now stocks the streets of NYZ, a once New York City torn apart by pandemic hell-bent on revenge against the man responsible for his family's slain, Alex Mercer. Since this doesn't spark the initial nerve-rattling reaction that you'd anticipate from a game of this nature, you sit through the first few missions completing objectives of various nature considering you are a military man in the middle of a war against infection and disease. But the main rush hits when you decide to take on Mercer too early in the game and instead of "ripping him to shreds" like you had planned prior to this confrontation, you immediatley become the new host of the Mercer Virus. Not saying you didn't see it coming considering he's on the cover with a biologically constructed extension on his arm resembling a blade, but it probably wasn't how you'd hoped he begin his transformation I guess. Nevertheless, you are now the fully defined Heller at this point who will continue to evolve at regular intervals throughout the game; seems now you are ready to pursue your destiny. This game has it's graphically satisfying moments, characterized by gorey combat and the stunning visuals that accompany it, but the main hype is getting to utilize your equipement with sheer efficiency and brutal finishers. The array of weapons at your disposal are mainly recycled from the orginal game, but with more depth now I suppose. This includes the iconic CLAW power, the HAMMERFISTS, WHIPFIST, etc. and a few new ones like the TENDRILS which are introduced in this game. Like most third-person action games that lack the shooter eminence, [PROTOTYPE 2] still continues to deliver with it's addicting combat and stylish finishers. You can choose to strike at your enemy by mashing buttons individually,or use the default combos from the tutorials menu, or can choose to get a little creative and tap buttons until your thumbs go sore trying to find a unique style of fighting exclusive to your gaming style only. Each of these options are equally as entertaining and rewarding, but in the end it's up to you to make that final decision when you spice it up. Like the other game, you can choose to utilize fallen enemies' weapons to your advantage by pick up firearms from the ground or hijacking personnel vehicles, but then again these superb features still don't manage to add up to the gratifing satisfaction that comes from fighting your foes tooth and nail. The ending seems a little contrived however, seeing as the final boss fight needs massive tuning when with the difficulty. Also, the optional side missions that require you to patch a call to HQ before starting are a little unedged, they somehow lack the non-linear basis that make side missions worth playing. All in all, [PROTOTYPE 2] is definatley a game that I would recommend to all of my friends who inquire about it, and I believe it will satisfy them the same way it did me.
