The games that usually get noticed as 'true horrors' , are usually large scale distributions of bloody, violent and scary games with blood-thirsty monsters and almost pitch-black environments.
Or are they?
The types of games, such as 'Slender' and 'Amnesia', have a main theme of horror, although they do not appear very popular, as the larger title games have been pushed forward. These include: 'Resident Evil franchise', 'Heavy Rain', 'silent hill' and 'fear'.
The games that have a small scale, or a not well know distribution usually get placed behind the massive stocks, even if the games have an outstanding story or have a more immersive feel. Some people usually judge the games on graphics rather than story, but the story and feel of the game, is more important than the looks. This has been shown to be the case by most free horror games out there, like those original 'Slender' and 'Amnesia' games.
The new zombie game 'Dying Light' has been developed to combine the dark elements of a zombie Apocalypse, and parkour...
...yes, parkour. This game might not have much of a story as of yet, but it definitely has potential for it. The game itself uses lighting to its advantage, having a full daylight system added on, which makes the horror element rise at night...spooky. The game itself is mainly based on an open world survival style strategy, the main theme being horror.
On the other hand, the playstation exclusive 'Beyond: Two Souls' does indeed include dark, gloomy elements, but it has a certain tilt to it, which adds extreme amounts of atmosphere and emotion to every turn on the way, including the horror elements which have been fused within the immersive story.
There are many more brilliant horror games that have not been as recognized as the mainstream ones, so there is still plenty more to show. If you know of any small scale games, free to play horrors, or games that have been over-looked but should, please share them for others to notice.
Thank you for reading.
