My 5 year old rig can no longer handle even medium settings in games so it is time to build a new machine. I built my last one from recommendations on here and it worked like a charm. Here is some information that will clarify what I am looking for:

1. Budget - $2,500

2. Purpose - gaming rig and also primary home computer for remote office, etc.

3. Don't need - monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, headphones, printer/scanner - have all of this.

4. Case - I have a full tower now and it is pretty large now that I lost my man cave due to a remodel, so I am leaning towards mid-tower. If there is a good quiet case that is somewhat resistant to dog hair then that is what I need.

5. Video Card - I prefer to get one really nice card and not go the SLI or crossfire route. The plan is to be able to run this rig for several years with little to no upgrades then build a new rig at a later date. I have been looking at gtx 780, gtx 780TI, and R9 290x - but I am open to whatever fits the ultimate build in this category.

6. OS - I love Windows 7 and would prefer to stick with it unless there is an overriding reason to switch to Windows 8.

7. I have never used SSD and would like to get an SSD for boot drive at the very least and possibly also my primary game storage drive (steam games eat up this drive - so it needs to be big). if price does not allow for a SSD drive for games then a good 2TB drive.

8. I need to get a blu-ray/DVD burner

9. RAM - would prefer at least 16GB

10. Sound Dampening - I would like to get as many parts optimized for silence as possible. My current case is a HAF932 with a silent PSW and I love the fact this thing makes minimal noise during start-up or intense gaming.

11. Sound - I am currently using onboard sound which is fine, but would love to get a good sound card - price permitting unless the mobo has good enough integrated sound that I don't need a stand alone card.

-If you need more information from me to help clarify what I am looking for let me know.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

Thanks,

Vorlon92

A friend has asked me to help him build a new pc: his budget is $700 US. He said he would prefer an intel (i5 or i7) build, but I am open to good amd build suggestions.

Machine will be used for moderate level photo editing and graphic design, home office work (spredsheets, web, database work, etc.). He is also a gamer and wants to be able to play games at decent settings: for example he told me he would like to be able to play bioshock, l4d2, dragon age, etc.

He already has and does not need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

He does require an OS, and says he wants Win 7. He has also requested the HD be at least 500GB.

Thanks in advance,

Great - thanks a lot guys! I do need the OS and I already have a set of speakers here so those builds work out perfectly.

I was wondering if you guys and girls could give me a couple of viable builds for a respectable work/gaming machine. My budget is $1500 US. I would like to get a couple years life out of the machine before having to add additional hard drives, vid cards, ram, etc.

I would like to go i7 920 if possible, onboard sound is fine, onboard NIC is fine. I am leaning towards a HD5850 or HD 5870 for the gpu. I would also like to get a 1TB HD, budget permitting. I am not carrying any parts over from my current machine other than the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Work on the machine will be lots of docs, pdfs, and browsers open simultaneously - while running video & meeting software.

Games - I play fps, rpg, and strategy. So the goal is to be able to run games like crysis, bioshock, mass effect as well as fallout 3, oblivion, dragon age, WiC, etc. None of which I can run currently.

At the moment I am using ibuypower for the builds and trying to price the parts on newegg.

thank you in advance,

It is $500 US dollars. That sounds right, I figured I would be going the AMD cpu/vid card blend for this price. I have been pricing it on newegg and so far I am really having to juggle things to get it in below $500.

I really need a new gaming pc and would like to build it for $500 or less. Any suggestions as to name brands or make would be greatly appreciated. I am leaning towards AMD for my processor and graphics card (ATI) , but if the price is right I will gladly go the NVIDIA Route. So please let me know what you would consider buying to get the most bang for $500 or less. I realize this will not be a top end machine, but if I can at least get a decent frame rate on modern games then I will be perfectly happy. Also, if this really can't be done for $500 or less then that is good to know as well.

I have the following items on hand and do not need to buy these:

Monitor,Sound Card(SB Audigy), OS(XP Pro), DVR-RW, CD-RW, Mouse, Keyboard.

So I believe I need the following:

Mobo, Video Card, Ram, Hard Drive, Power Supply, Case

I am considering using this May 2009 article as a general guideline and putting the extra money I save on items I already have towards possibly better RAM or a better videocard.
