What a joke. This is turning into a modern times witch hunt. It only shoes how deficient our treatment of psychological deviants is.

It's only a step behind those who think the judicial system is supposed to give him "what he deserves". Good god how is it that a thousand years old civilization can't resolve these things in a civilized manner?

Pixel-Pirate

Totally this. I probably won't win any points for this opinion, but I think there would be few less sexual deviants and few less crimes involving them if treatment was better. I personally think societies overall treatment of the mentally ill is deplorable and disgusting.

Agreed. I am reminded of how Alex was treated in A Clockwork Orange, except in this case, no actual crime was committed.

Is ottawasun.com a reliable news source? Never heard of it, but I'm not from Canada. Anyway, the case reminds me of the Christopher Handley one, where a man was arrested for possessing Japanese manga porn involving underage girls. Really, when you think about it, stuff on paper (or in this case, text on a computer screen) does not necessarily translate to real world activities.

Apparently it was, so much so that Infinity Ward decided to take the video down from youtube because of the criticism they were receiving.

It looks like a couple people involved in the video game press ARE taking offense to the video:

Sarcasticgamer.com

Gamespot's Brendan Sinclair

"I'm more bugged by this MW2 ad than the terrorist crap. I've got all the context I need to hate the ad."

Game Informer's Philip Kollar

"Great write-up. Yeah, it's obviously a problem with IW's community, but why would they make themselves complicit in it? So dumb."

"A great write-up from @LonoSG on why that new Modern Warfare 2 trailer is so unbelievably stupid."

While I'm not offended by it (I found Team America's portrayal of the Film Actor's Guild hilarious), I still think this looks really bad on their PR. They should have known this would stir some controversy.

[QUOTE="GrandJury"]I think that 90%-100% of us here will agree that child porn is horrible and any person who buys and enjoys it should burn in hell. Yes there are kinky types of porn out there but Child porno should never even have existed, but sadly it does. I can't believe there are people out there who actually try to convince others that it is right. As for your topic I am not exactly sure where you are getting at. Manga is just drawing, there is really no harm. With Sexting if the person is under the age of 18 it could be a problem. Either way I stay away from the stuff.rolfboy

Basically, there are two reasons why laws against child porn exist: One, because the stuff itself a blight to society in of itself. Two, because buying it directly supports the torturing of the child to make it. It is an issue on whether or not the reason the lawexist is to remove a toxic element of society or the need to protect the rights of the children depicted in the porn.

Basically, the motivation of one of the reasonings allows a precendent for related issues. The choice of the first one means that someone should be prosecuted for something like sexting (regardless of the punishment) or anything depiction of a child that society deems offensive, even if nobody was violated/tortured to produce it. The second one somewhat implies that a depiction of a child in a mature setting is trivial compared to the act of supporting the torture and violation of the child in order to produce that stuff, which somewhat implies that child porn would be in the same league as other porn if the child, hypothetically, could consent to the activities.

The main motivations may not be mutually exclusive, but those motivations are somewhat relevant when teens are labeled as sex offenders for sexting and people can be endited (sp?) on charges of child porn for possesing hand drawn manga porn.

I think the main reason it's illegal is to protect the children from sexual abuse. There are age of consent laws everywhere, and the production of that material breaks those laws. That being said, the only reason I'm posting on this topic is that I am reminded of the ongoing Christopher Handley case, in which a man owned lolicon manga (cartoon comics depicting children having sex), and was arrested for it in the state of Iowa. A number of comic writers, anime sites, etc. voiced their opinions on the case, saying that it was violation of freedom of expression, which in that case, I'd have to agree with since no actual children were harmed.
