I've never played a Zelda game, so that's a good suggestion. It's better than the couple re-releases? Ocarina of Time and/or Majora's Mask?

So, I bought my wife a 3Ds about a year ago because she went on and on about how much she wanted to play video games. I should have known better. In the year that she has owned it, she has played it exactly 0 times. I know where it is, but I am positive she wouldn't even know where to look for it if she wanted to find it.

But she doesn't even want to find it.

So I have decided to take it over. However, I have never played a nintendo game other than the original super mario bros 1-3 and battletoads on NES. So I want some opinions. What should I get? What are some good games that are uniquely 3DS in nature? Or uniquely Nintendo in nature. I have Mario 3D World, as my wife is a mario fan so that's what I bought, and I want to pick up Bravely Default, but what else?

Also, I have no interest in brawlers, so no Super Smash Bros and no Mario Kart. No interest in either of those.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I've had enough. I'm tired of all the articles about this issue: how much microsoft pays women, which online community is most hostile or most welcoming to women. Rather than get annoyed by constantly being force fed this information I have decided I will no longer even open any article on the issue.

No need to leave comments below about my thoughts, encouraging the debate further. No need to share my take or my opinion and start an argument, which then leads to insults on both sides. No more defending or attacking GamerGate, Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, or anything.

I have just decided to boycott the whole topic. I encourage you all to boycott the articles as well if you are as tired of the debate as I am. No need for defamation, cursing, insults, "trolling", etc. Just step away. No more getting angry about another person upset that X video game is about a man, or Y video game developer supports Sarkeesian. Notice I'm speaking to both sides of the argument. Lets together, as a group, just stop.

I am looking for a racing game. I have some very specific requirements for the game I would like to buy.

1. I want it to be cars. Not RCs, motorcycles, ATVs, or karts, but cars.

2. the cars need to be non-livery cars. I have Dirt 3, and while it's super fun and I thoroughly enjoy it, I don't like the fact that the cars are all liveried up. (I don't care if liveried is a word, I used it. Move on.)

3. while I would be ok with some racetrack courses, I would prefer there to be some street racing involved as well.

4. I would prefer it to be eye candy as well. I know people will say graphics aren't everything, and I agree. But in this case, I want the game to look good. Meaning probably 2010 or newer at least. NFS Hot Pursuit looks good, and meets most of those requirements, but I want to know if there is anything better.

I would actually prefer a game like Midnight Club 3, back in the PS2/Xbox era. That game was awesome sauce. Lots of great looking street cars, and they were modifiable. That was the best part. I loved changing the look of the cars, adding custom hoods, rims, doors, etc. If anybody knows a game like that, one that is not Midnight Club: LA, I would love to hear it. It seems that customizability has left games, for the most part.

I have had my eye on Assetto Corsa, but the fact that it's still in early access has deterred me. Anybody familiar with that game? Should I take the plunge? Are there any other games I should look at getting? Is NFS Hot Pursuit going to be my best bet? I heard that was better than any of the other NFS games since then, but what am I missing?

@Jacanuk: First, I was exaggerating to make a point. It obviously can't ruin an entire generation, but it has set a dangerous precedent of not setting realistic expectations. I agree with you that I would rather wait for a game to be released for a few extra months and get a finished product, but I feel they will start putting out these release dates, then not working to actually meet them. We don't need to work harder, there's no harm in not holding up to our self imposed deadline.

@Archangel3371: I agree with you that it would be petty to not buy a quality game just because it was delayed. While I have every intention of getting watchdogs, I unfortunately am unable to at the moment for reasons wholly unrelated to the game. I do disagree though, in that not only do I anticipate an epidemic, I feel like there already is one. How many PS4/XB1 games have been delayed by this point? I feel like it is far more than normal. Of course, that could just be an incorrect impression, as there are so few games for both consoles that when one gets delayed, that is a much larger percentage. But it's not just one, it's like 4 or 5 titles that have been delayed since the launch of the PS4, not counting watchdogs or Driveclub. Especially when you look at percentages of games that have NOT been delayed versus those that have, the number is huge. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 7.7% is the number that makes an outbreak become an epidemic. If the number of flu related deaths is 7.7%. So, using the same statistic, if the number of AAA titles (cause that's all I'm talking about here) that have been delayed exceeds 7.7% it's an epidemic. That's around 7 or 8 games for every 100 that have been released. I have counted 7 delayed titles, and I still feel like I'm missing one. To keep the numbers fair, we should only look at games that have a release date and compare. There are definitely not 100 next gen titles with release dates, so we are looking well over that 7.7%

Again, I am still very happy with my purchase of a PS4. I love my system. It was worth it in my opinion. When some other outside matters resolve themselves, I will be buying watch dogs. I will be buying the order: 1886. I might even pick up DriveClub. I applaud ubisoft and the developers to take what was at the time a very risky and daring business move in delaying WatchDogs. Granted, they just used that as an excuse for 6 more months of promotion, but it could very easily have gone another route and people may have lost interest. I feel that will be the case with ESO, but maybe not. I just hope the proportion of delayed titles starts to dwindle again as publishers and developers start working with the next gen systems more and more.

So, first, I don't mean to say Watch Dogs is a bad game. I haven't played it yet. I want to very badly. That's not what this is about.

In the weeks and months leading up to the launch of the PS4 and XB1 (though I will focus on the PS4, cause I'm a Sony fanboy), Watch Dogs was probably the most anticipated launch game. If not the most, at least ONE OF the most. People I knew were pre-ordering their PS4 and a copy of Watch Dogs, with that to be their only PS4 game at launch.

But then Watch Dogs got delayed. It was a bold and very scary decision for the developers and Ubisoft, I'm sure. The game they ended up releasing, from what I hear, is a good game, so maybe the delay was worth it. The problem is, they set a precedent that has continued to plague this new generation of consoles.

Now, I should do my research, but I'm pretty sure Watch Dogs was delayed before Drive Club. Drive Club may have been first. Either way, they happened almost on top of each other. And suddenly it became okay to delay your game. I'm not saying either company made the wrong decision and that they should have released a buggy game. All I'm saying is it has had a negative impact on the value of the new generation of consoles.

How many next gen games are being delayed now. Elder Scrolls Online, The Division, The Order: 1886, just to name a few. The list of high profile, AAA games that are getting delayed is scary, and I think the list is only going to get bigger. Especially now that Watch Dogs was so successful. Broke Ubisoft's record for pre-orders. Obviously they were able to delay their game with no serious impact to sales. More developers are going to be able to say, "This game isn't quite where I would like it to be, lets delay it." Deadlines no longer mean anything. (Let's be honest, they didn't mean a whole lot before anyway.)

I'm not saying Ubisoft should have released the game before it was ready. I just wish that developers would wait until they know for sure when they will have a game finished before they give us a release date. And then work overtime if they have to in order to meet the deadline that they game themselves. That's all. I don't feel like my wish is too demanding. If they are going to set an expectation, do so when you are ready, and then live up to that. I care a lot less when a game is given a launch date of TBD until a month before it was released. They didn't build up the expectation. Drive Club has actually been delayed again as well. This is especially problematic because that was one of their big sellers for PS Plus. No one is demanding you set an expectation. (I'm speaking to the publishers more, because they are usually the ones that set the release dates.) So don't do it until you are ready. Please.

Probably Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. I was in college, and I missed classes and called in sick 3 days in a row because I could not stop playing it. When I would try to sleep, I would just lay there thinking about the game. I'm sure I averaged 20 hours a day on that game for the first few days of owning it.

Bastion was on sale today so I decided to pick it up. It was listed as an RPG, so I was expecting an RPG, but what I got really didn't feel like an RPG. Why, though? What makes this game feel more like an action game than an RPG? (Don't take this as a criticism of the game, I'm actually enjoying the game immensely.)

This led me to think on a wider basis, what makes a game an RPG? My initial reaction is it has an experience and levelling up mechanic. But this can't be true, because that would make Far Cry 3 an RPG, and it most definitely was not.

Which means that a skill tree also does not make an RPG, because Far Cry 3 has a skill tree. Bastion has these two elements. But neither game felt like an RPG to me.

I have some ideas, but I have pondered on this alot today, so I thought I'd see what the community has to say. I was thinking questing, choice, loot, and the ability to create a role of your own. Far Cry 3 you are Jason Brody. Bastion you are the kid (he might have a name, if he does, it hasn't been revealed thus far to me). I have to ability to shape the role or the character of either of these two individuals. Sure I can choose what tattoos Jason Brody gets, or what weapons the kid is using, but you don't define the role. You don't create the character. Even just the ability to name the character would go a long ways to making either of these games feel like an RPG.

Loot. The constant flow of new equipment to pick up or buy goes a long ways to making it feel like an RPG. Not just swapping one gun for another, every FPS game does that. I'm talking about looking at the stats of each item, comparing it with what you have, and then as soon as you equip a new item, starting the search for something even better. It's the driving force behind the Action RPG genre (Diablo, PoE, Torchlight, etc).

Questing and choice go hand in hand. There needs to be weighty choices, and you should have some say in how the story unfolds. The pace that it unfolds in. When to do a story quest and when to do a side quest. You need to be forced to choose between one thing and another, and in general there should be consequences to your choices.

Here's the problem. I feel like that is a very good list, but no one of these items is exclusive to an RPG, and an RPG doesn't need all of these elements to be an RPG. Look at the Final Fantasy series. There is no character creation, loot is rare, and there is not an abundance of side quests or weighty choices. But no one would deny that it's an RPG series. GTA games use questing and pacing pretty heavily, and even have some significant choices (do I assassinate this guy or let him live, or do I smash and grab the jewelry store or go a more stealthy route). But that is most definitely not an RPG. So what are other people's thoughts, or did I make this too long and now everybody has lost interest?

My problem with this is the games on this list are so different. Path of Exile is NOT Pay 2 Win, and is probably the funnest game I play on my PC, but the ARPG genre is my genre of choice. But if you want an MMO, you have to decide if you want a FPS or RPG, in which case I would recommend Planetside 2 or Neverwinter, respectively.
