@Faroon I agree that only paying once and that's it is a good mark on the side of the console, but you end up spending more money on games and DLC, extra controllers, XBox Live and so on. The money that you save on games which are generally £10-£20 cheaper on PC on release on steam, DLC because PC doesn't have the compulsory licensing fees that console manufacturers have (unless you're EA/Activision and wanna rip gamers off no matter what) and people like Valve who give it out for free, F2P games which are now starting to get really worth playing (Team Fortress 2, Blacklight, Ghost Recon Online, LoL), no fees to play online etc. I think makes up for the fact that you're paying more to buy a PC outright and keep upgrading it every 3ish years. Plus when you take into account mods, some of which are better than full games, and the frequent updates you get more value and re-playability out of certain games. Take Half Life 2 for example, some of the stuff that has come from that modding community is amazing. A 5 year old GPU wil definitely run most modern games, and if the graphics arent what interests you then that would most certainly do fine. Consoles generally run their games on par with low-medium on a PC and a GPU from 2007-2009 will run the majority of todays games at that setting no problem. Obviously some games are a lot more demanding/not as well optimised as others so it may have a few issues here and there but for the most part it would be absolutely fine. If we wanna talk about graphics and running a rig with a brand new GPU, games like BF3 and the original Crysis look amazing when you compare them to their console counterparts...honestly it's like day and night. I'm interested to see what this steam box ends up being, i doubt its gonna tear me away from my rig, but bringing more people into the fold could never be bad for PC gaming. More players = more games = more support = healthier PC gaming scene :)

@Faroon Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-console or anything...I have both a PS3 and a 360 and I think they're great, I'm just pointing out how much more you can get out of having even a middling gaming rig....if you have a 3-5 year old GPU or something you can still play recent games, but the thing that I love about PC gaming is that you have the option to upgrade and you do get a better experience...not just graphically either, you can get free games, experimental games, gajillions of indie titles, mods, frequent updates, full installs for every game, FULL 1080p, STEAM SALES (!!!). We don't love PC just for the SUPA SIK GRFX BRO, we love PC for the openness of the platform and the freedom that gives us.

@Faroon @Cymru94 only thing is 360 games dont output at 1080p...its either 720p or 540p.

PC's don't just give you higher resolution...they give you Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, Tessellation, a hell of a lot more memory etc...and they're infinitely upgradable.Plus drivers generally update themselves....and the only thing you need to worry about with processors, for the time being, is 'get one with 4 cores'.

This is a man who has openly said that he 'doesn't like games' and would much rather watch a movie....this man is clearly a failed movie maker who saw an opportunity to push his masturbatory fantasies on an industry that doesn't want him and is now having the audacity to try and lecture it on what he thinks it should be.

Does anyone really think that hardcore gamers on pc (or even consoles) are really gonna give up their rigs/consoles and go out and get tablets to play games on? There are just as many hardcore gamers now as there ever was, so this fallacy that mobile gaming is killing traditional gaming is completely ridiculous.

I have a tablet, I play games on it, but that doesn't mean I've stopped playing games on my PC or either of the consoles and your Mum was never gonna play Assassins Creed anyway, it just means that publishers and developers have more freedom to choose the platform they work on, which means more games for everyone, which means a more profitable industry, which means a bigger industry.....I don't see how this is a bad thing.
