@VoidSECT @tengen23 Oh yeah, I agree it would be great to bring everyone together, but I don't think E3 welcomes these kind of political issues. The LGBT community is not trying to create walls to keep anyone out, rather they feel left out and are trying to create an event that can bring them more attention in the gaming community.

@VoidSECT @tengen23 You would probably find it less ridiculous if you thought about the issues faced by people who live at the intersection of gaming culture and LGBT culture. If you think about that for a moment, you might realize that LGBT gamers don't see their own values and perspective reflected in a lot of games. If you were part of the LGBT community and you were a gamer you might want to talk to other people about those issues. So please explain, why is this ridiculous?

@VoidSECT Did you actually read the article, or did you jump straight to the comment thread? Kevin's lead in the third paragraph is "I'm often asked why the LGBT community "needs" a convention just for them." and he answers your question there.

I think there is still a question of proportion. I totally agree that there are games that tackle mature issues, some games even approach those issues in thought-provoking ways. But if you look at the trends, what is most commonly found in the most popular games, it usually falls short of dealing with mature themes. That's not to bash on 'fun' as Tom puts it. I'm more concerned with games that market themselves as 'harmless fun' when in reality they contain harmful messages about the value of human life, about gender, race, and so on.

This is not the least bit surprising. Guns are under a lot of pressure right now from the federal government. Alexander is seeking re-election next year, and one of his biggest sponsors is the gun lobby, so of course he is going to do everything he can to redirect the blame. Unfortunately video games are an easy target because of all kinds of cultural biases against them.
