"Square Enix's franchises are well established and require ever-higher production budgets to match and surpass past performance..."
What a load of crap! Does this guy even pay attention to his own words, in one phrase he succeeded at contradicting himself, and that is an expert opinion...wow!
I really don't get it. If you shoot a movie and you make a sequel with a story based in the same sets, you won't have to rebuild all the sets, you won't have to decorate them, you won't have to light them etc. So if they are not releasing a game with a brand spanking new engine that they build themselves how could it cost more to make this one than the previous?
Granted this TR looks completely different from the previous ones so I guess they had to acquire new tools/engine/others just to make it. Still, it's not like the developers reinvented the wheel. I mean, surely there are a ton of stuff that can be reusable, reapplyable and so forth, thus lower the cost.
I mean you play the 2 Batman and it is clear that the second one is based on the first, same textures, lighting, engine etc. If Rocksteady were to tell me that the second one cost more than the first (for which they had to create everything from scratch) I would really be puzzled and seriously doubt their management skills.
And by the way, us gamers just need a great story, solid mechanics and cool visuals and we are good to go. A 100 million to make a game, that overkill.
@m4a5 @slave1_basic What I mean is a single player RPG, you know like Phantasy Star 5, so as to continue from where things left off back in the day of the Sega Genesis
Why don't you do like any respectable software company (Bethesda, Valve etc.) and release an SDK and let the modder extand the life of your products, for free I might add. Not only will they supply you with great ideas for future titles, for free I might add, but they will also help create more effective technologies and design, for free I might add.
Of course that is not a very console centric solution, cant have your cake and eat it too I guess
