They also found a bag approximately 40 metres away that contained a replica pistol as well a baseball bat, hammer, and gloves.
The items were found after a security alert on the Budore Road which began on Sunday and lasted more than 24 hours.
Officers suspect dissident republicans. They said that the rocket launcher was "viable" and could have been there for as long as a month.
The alert was initiated by police at 17:30 BST on Sunday when they were made aware that there was a "suspicious" object in the Budore Road vicinity.
They closed a number of roads and carried out searches.

For the purpose of inspecting the rocket launcher, Army bomb disposal personnel were called to the spot.
Det Insp David Lowans said: "Our investigation is at an early stage, however, we now believe that the improvised rocket launcher has been in the Budore Road area for between three to four weeks.
"We have also established that the launcher is functional, which proves that whoever left it there did not care about who might find it."
The bag was found in follow-up searches Monday.
"While I am unable to link the finds at the moment, they both bear all of the hallmarks dissident republicans and it is a strong line for inquiry," said the detective.
"We are performing further searches of this area today following information received from members of public."
