Then we'll have another exception. If the protagonist was a female more often, we'd simply have more very successful games. The only reason there are only a few amazing games with women in it is because not enough big developers want to take the chance of actually having a female protagonist. There are more unsuccessful games out there with male leads than there are women simply because more games have a male lead. Old trends are difficult to get out of and developers and publishers are simply too scared of trying something new. It’s not that most games with female protagonists are destined to fail; it’s that there aren’t enough good games already out there with a female protagonist for it to appear a safe choice. I take my hat off to all of the developers out there that are already making games with female protagonists.
@LunasMeow @aronj I agree that in a way, Femhawke and Femshep are an exception since the games were actually marketed with the male protagonist although a lot of guys did opt to play as the female character. I wouldnt say that anyone could really call Lara Croft an exception anymore though, since she's no longer solely marketed for her breasts and ass anymore. She makes the page looking pretty beat up and bloody. Tomb Raider really does show that the protagonist doesnt have to be male for a game to be successful. If Remember Me is an incredible game it'll sell well regardless.
@LunasMeow @rocketsatdawn Im more making the point that it wont always be like that. Think about it, in the 90's women were only princesses or helpless characters to be rescued. Thats not the case any more and as much as these publishers are looking at past sales, female protagonists are more popular in games today than they've ever been. TV and Radio all went through the transition of how gender is addressed, games are just the next thing to change.
In a way, this whole subject seems a little irrelevant. It’s essentially a group of publishers that just can’t seem to visualise how the industry has changed and is developing. Imagine the loss for a publisher that refused the new Tomb Raider. It’s been at the top of the UK charts for two weeks now and I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that it’s the top selling game of 2013 thus far.
I've been really enjoying playing the game with my mates but hell yeah there is a **** load of bugs. I really want them to fix the airport. That has annoyed me more than most in game issues. I clear a nice big space and put the airport down. But no this flat plot of land is apparantly not flat enough to put down another runway. Ahhhh and then when I had enough cash I demolished it and put a new one elsewhere. Well guess what happens then. It is so not funny. Grrrhhh. I've given up on airports.
Also the server disconnect message on the top left pops up all the time. Whatever you do, do not try to visit your mates city when they're down and pray to god that they don't go down during the loading screen. My advice is hide out in your own city until they have fully fixed the server issues. Like a little hermit mayor.
