Alienware PC's are nice, but i don't recommend ANY pre-built machine. They're too expensive, especially when u can buildit's equalMUCH cheaper.Don't be intimidated,BUILD YOUR OWN.I built one not knowing what i was doing, and it worked fine.Use your old case,CD roms, and hard drive if it's drive if your on a tight budget.Just get ya a motherboard, cpu, andmaybe upgrade your video card (you can buy a mother/cpu combo if your nervous).

The machines i built as a rookie all worked, and were VERY easy to do.You need to do a bit of reading to make sure the parts are compatible. You can get all of these for a few hundred bucks.I bet that alienware machine is well over a grand.

Building your own makes ya feel good, and you'll learn something.Your machine might be ugly in your old case, but it will perform just as well as the alien.Hell, get ya a $75 case with pretty lights if u want the alienware look.

Never buy a pre-built machine when u can get the same for half the price.

I've been playing F2P LOTRO for a few months. I had a friend over,so i blew the dust off my oldmachine to install LOTR,and see how it played.

LOTROs mim req is a 1.8 cpu,so i didn't expect much out of my 1.2 amd (allthough it has allmost 2 gigs RAM,and a nvidia GS7600 512 video card). The framerate was great with settings on the low side. I'm shocked really. The GS7600 is runnin in 'low power' mode in a 4x AGP slot, and the CPU is ancient. ..yet the game is smooth, and looks good.

My point is,don't lose hope if your short on the minimum specs.

QUOTE : hofuldig asks..."i am using a Creative X-FI Gamer and it has a setting called Bass Redirection then cross over frequency with a slider that goes from 10Hz to 200Hz.

My main questions are what is this and what dose it do to bass? I bought this card without drivers or a manual so im kinda in the dark." ]UNQUOTE

Good question hofuldig. This is my best shot at explaining 'frequencies':

The human 'hearing range' is 20hz-20,000HZ. :|

20-40hz is very low bass, the kind that rappers like.Itrattles windows, and it carries farthest....that's why you only hear deepbass when yourfar away.

....if u set it to 10 hz,it'd be so low pitched, you'd basicallyjust 'feel' it.

40-100 hz bass hits ya in the chest, most pronounced in country music.

100-200 is tighter bass,mid-drums,popular in heavy metal.

300-5000hz is doesn't have a 'hit'....human voices,etc are in this 'midrange'.

5000-20,000 is peircing basically.You hear symbols,and dings.

The higher the hertz, the more high pitched the sound.

The slider is to set your bass cutoff,or (crossover)....slide it to 200hz,andyou'l only hear bass up to that 'pitch'.Put it at 10HZ,andonly the deepest

bass will pass to the speaker.

I'd set it at 200hz,a good setting for all types of music. It also depends on your setup. For example,You may have other speakers that can cover

the 100-300 bass....if so,u might want to limit your sub to 100hz and below.Play around with the slider,and you'll see.Don't worry,you won't hurt anything. ;)

Dungeons & Dragons has free play, yes, but you can't leavethe starting port without your wallet. They don't tell you this,i found out the hard way.The game was fun though, and you'll get many hours of play before that happens.

Lord of the rings is much the same.I'm currently playing it,and allready see getting past weathertop will be a problem.Quests are withheld unless you have the turbine points to unlock the 'packages'.DON'T buy a mount, and get all kills etc might save me enough points to open some..maybe all of these areas...much better than D&D in this sense.

The point is...these titles are NOT free really, and they shouldn't be advertised as such.

I can't sleep, and despite searching through my entire catalogue of games and what seems like every single game on Steam I still can't find anything I want to play. In fact the older I get the less motivation I have to play anything. I don't know if this is a reflection on modern games or something else but it's definitely a problem for me - I used to love getting home from work and just relaxing with a good game for a few hours. I think my main problem is that I play games primarily for their storylines and not the fun or exciting gameplay - I don't find running around shooting people entertaining if there is no purpose to it, which is why I rarely, if ever, touch online multiplayer.VoltairesGhost

I know how you feel.I'm a veteran with 200+ titles...some were played 30 mins or less, others thousands of hours.I'm not too concerned with graphics either...heck i'm not concerned with games.I intended to give ya some gaming ideas, but it would be bad advice. We shouldn't be gaming,we should be doing something outside.

Consoles,PCs,years go by as we perform meaningless tasks in virtual worlds.I know this, yet here i am.I was a motocross racer for gods sake.

I'm posting this sir,to keep you and others from virtual insanity.Go outside, stomp your PC to bits (take out the vid card for me)...do it now.Breath the fresh air, andlive life for real. :)

Respectively

Try using "real life game",or "virtual life game" in a search. There are massive online games that don't fight...you live to build, and race cars in one.I can't remember name.

Try www.mmorpg.comor www.freemmorpglist.com...both are good sources of massive virtual life genres.:D

I was into WW2 combat sims mostly,i agree there doesn't seem to be many new ones.

I started with AIR WARRIOR series (97-99)which supported 250 people...back then,250 was an MMO,lol...then cameWARBIRDS (not listed at gamespot.Odd,it was pretty cool).

...then camemy purpose in life,WWII ONLINE.A vast 2001sim with great vehicle realism, encompassing some of france, and all of belgium with 10'000+ players.Choose allied,or axis, operate all kinds of vehicles...tanks(5 crw),fighters,bombers(9),boats(5-9),and trucks(14) ..yep,just haul players, cargo, even tow your buds 88.After a year of playing,i was MIA to reality.

Presently called BATTLEFIELD EUROPE,get fat and pimply.I just tried to re-enlist,the games too much for my machine...and it's a quick one !

Yes,IL2 is a good one.

I never liked ANY of the jet sims...no dogfighting really.

Space combat is alot harder....seeing as there's no up,or down.Very easy to get lost, and disoriented.I trun back to dock, and discover i'm approaching upside down,or sideways. :|

I prefer dogfighting with an atmosphere....compensating for drag, using my flaps, feeling the wind buffet my aircraft, etc.

WW1 is too slow and tight.I can't stand doing endless loops...we look like a cloud of gnats.Jets' are too far apart...fire and forget bites. :(

WW2 is where it's at.Perfect balance...the best dogfighting there is,hands down :!:

We had a blast on sega genesis road rash. The game steadily fell apart with each sequel...kinda like movies usually do.The playstation 1 version had improved grafs, butlost the 'treetop' feeling.Sony made up for it with the original 'jet moto'...a hard, but fun hover bike racer. :D

I've never seen anything like roadrash on the PC.:( I've been a PC gamer for 12 years....ever since i sold my playstation 1.PC definitely favor simulators (arcade 'mode'is for no talent wimps anyway)....but there are exceptions!

I'm all about realistic sims...tougher,the better.Makes it more rewarding.Hard simsseperate the men from the boys.Graphics are a distant third to gameplay and physics as most gamers know..I chuckle at the focus on graphics....we'd enoy the old road rash i bet.

Agreat sim is GPL below.A good looking GP racer with physics that smoke anything i've played...and it's 12 yrs old !! If your a sim lover who digs GP,grab 'grand prix legends 2004 demo'.Loyalfans still race online at VROC.How many titles can say they're still played online over a decade later? I can think of ONE...'starsiege tribes',but its a halo type of game.

P.S. Need for speed was originally on the panasonic 3DO system...wasn't it? Loved the original, and it's sequels held their own.

Consoles are becoming PC's...Consolesonly chance to compete against the allmighty PC was to emulate them.Consoles aresmall, limited PC's that fit some people.

They simlpy can't win withoutbecome PC's.I joking say "consoles are for people to stupid,or lazy to operate a PC"

Funny,i started on consoles.I cracked onmy 5th system, the PS1.My friendwas crewing B-25 bombers.Guns, eventhe co-pilot we're all real people.Nine users in one plane.A world in itself,1000's waging war....and there i sat, running through the same ole crap on my console...that was 1996.I'll never go back,no matter how far consoles go.

PC gamer...for life.

Now console's have online, and more...but still fall way short of a PC.They're good gaming systems,yes....but i do more than game on my all in one, chop it,slice it,dice it PC.I also enjoy having adesk.I have a good cockpit for my wheel & pedals....i can eat sandwiches, arrange beer cans in various ways..
