Exactly. When you tell a joke about the holocaust you rarely make the conscious connection between the subject and the subject matter itself - in this case, dead bodies, families broken apart, rape, murder, stacks of bodies, arbitrary executions of helpless people, starving people freezing to death in the cold... you don't picture any of that. Perhaps you should, but that's not the point I'm making.

The point I'm making is that when you mention the holocaust in a joking or offhand manner - or any other horrible event for that matter - you picture a cartoonized version of it and push out every sobering image out of your mind.

If we didn't apply this mental filter, we could not joke about anything, because every situation has countless underlying realities that would be to humour what vinegar is to an acid burn.

I actually did know what I was signing. I just forgot about it later on. I didn't do it out of a 'desire to help', because I don't want to help, or at least not that way. These were my exact thought processes at the time (probably): "hmm that guy is sure talking a lot. I wonder if giving him three hundred dollars a year will make him shut up. Documents.
