[QUOTE="Ilikemyname420"] I was talking about PS3 games.....seriously what else would I be talking about? It was never unbreakable, anybody who told you that is a complete fool.

Again the security on the disc can be copied. There is software out there that will allow you to copy EVERYTHING off a Blu-ray disc including the copy protection. They can come up with whatever security key they like, on the discs themselves, as long as I can read the disc I can copy it. There is no way around it, it's literally copy paste.

Ilikemyname420

Anything that can be read can be copied logic is mostly right but check out why bluray GAME discs are copied into computers and not sold as pirated disc why? But they have pirated BLURAY MOVIES AVAILABLE

They are copied to HD simply because there ARE pirates who use jailbreak to play pirated games but mainly it's because they are uninformed idiots who just follow news (and the hype like that created around here) while begging the hacker community for help for the simplest crap (which most real hackers hate BTW).

Most of these pirates just heard about jailbreak and figured that was the ONLY way to pirate and frankly if you are against piracy you should be thankful. These idiots are basically ruining their own machines at least for what they intended it for(piracy). Jailbreak is not piracy firmware period. If they load that stuff onto their machines just to do that, they've basically just shot themselves in the foot. They will be so limited it shouldn't even be worth it to them (because of the reasons I listed in my first post in this thread). Yet it's these dumbasses who keep doing it and giving a bad name to anyone jailbreaking their PS3's for legit reasons (and trust me there are way more than some people on this site want to think).

There's a better method they could use but most hackers would be damned if we ever actually give them the damn method considering the majority of us don't use it ourselves because we actually respect the people who make our games.

Each game is marked with some sensors wherever PS3 games are produced. PS3 detects this before starting the game. A copied game doesn't have these so it wont run. You can ask any hacker. and there is no legit reason for jailbreaking, cause it breaks the security code. Its like saying you broke into an atm booth to check your balance (for some reason if banks stop showing balance on it) and by doing so you are leaving it free for any one to withdraw money or ride it. No matter how you turn it, its illegal.

anyway lets get back on topic.

[QUOTE="Ilikemyname420"] They were able to pirate games long before that and they WERE pirating games long before that.....it's only till now that anyone took any bloody notice (up untill jailbreak a good chunk of people on this site would have told you it was impossible).

The copy protection on the disc had nothing to do with the key that was released. The key was to sign off on an update as if it were from Sony, and thus embed their own firmware (it didn't copy anything, it just replaced parts with what they needed) as if it were a legit update and then allow ANY applicable software to run ie. Linux.

The Blu-ray copy protection could and CAN easily be copied straight off the disc with the right software. An exact image is an exact image when it comes to Blu-ray. They didn't need the key to do that or jailbreak or anything else .... you are the one who should get your facts straight.....because they've been pirating games for a looooooong time before that.

Ilikemyname420

I am not talking about pirating games, everyone knows they have been doing it for years. I am talking about pirating PS3 games a system that was still unbreakable 6 months back. How many people do you think runs linux in comparision to running backed up games??

Pirating Bluray games doesn't work as your normal ones each Bluray game disc has an unique security ID which they can't copy to a copied one, with the use of the dongle they just bipassed it yet you still have to have a bluray disc in your system when playing any games that are backed up. Do some research or just go to Singapore you will see there are millions of backed up bluray movies but none for PS3. Fact.

Since this current outage has nothing to do with Geo Hotz or Anonymous, I don't see how Sony's f-up is their problem. For all of you claiming otherwise- it's time time to put up or shut up. If you've got evidence, use it. If you don't, stop trying to find a boogeyman.LongZhiZi

"Since this current outage has nothing to do with Geo Hotz or Anonymous," why don't you prove this first or like you said shut up :)

[QUOTE="megadeth1984"]

[QUOTE="Ilikemyname420"] Funny thing is you could pirate PS3 games without jailbreak and be allowed to play them as if they were retail copies..... and this was looooooong before jailbreak.

Sony helped develop Blu-Ray. In the past consoles had to be modified to play burnt discs, hence the mod chip. One of the selling points to Blu-Ray is that it's impossible for something reading the discs to tell the difference between a pressed retail disc, a BD-R or a BD-RW, whereas it was quite possible to tell the difference between a pressed CD or a CD-R/RW as well as a pressed DVD or a DVD-R/RW.

With Blu-ray all people have to do is pass the copy protections on the disc and copy the disc image exactly. Even without jailbreak or any modding to their system they can play burnt discs as long as they can get past the copy protection that was on the disc itself (and all of this Sony supported by supporting Blu-ray in the first place).

Jailbreak is the dumbest way you could go about pirating PS3 games. You've basically ensured you have old and modified firmware which means:

A) You can't play new games unless they are modified to work with older firmware.

B) You can't get on to PSN to play those games.

C) You have blown your warranty doing it.

Whereas the method to copy the discs on to a writable format of Blu-Ray and get past the copy protection would basically mean nobody except somebody who physically saw the disc you were using would know you pirated it. That would mean no old firmware, that you could still play on PSN, and that you haven't blown your warranty.

There is no way in hell Geohot intended jailbreak to play back-up games. They already had a method faaaaaaaaaaaar better than that. The people who use it for that are frankly idiots. That's why I find it absolutely insane that people assume jailbreak = pirating games, or that that was Geohot's intention when he created it.

As for the topic I obviously support Geohot however I don't support Anon (even though I don't think as a group they were behind the recent attack) mainly because the previous announced attack was a DDOS and as much as they'd like to think it's not, it IS a crime.

Ilikemyname420

But before the jail break they couldn't break the security code, and even after they did break the security code they couldn't for games, only for bluray movies and data they were successful. Get your facts right man.

If you don't see that Geohotz intended to jailbreak I think you are just blinding yourself, Geohotz did it when a lot of people were trying to hack through the dongle and he was the first one who was successful and he shared it with everyone else. Geohotz is just pretending to be saint that he isn't don't fall into that. He is a lowlife scum, who is ruining our time and money as well as Sony's.

None really, since this whole thing is opinionated and can only be judged on a per case basis. Personally, PS2 and single play kept me out of the PSN action for the longest I can remember too.

Victorious_Fize

Not really man, cause if you own a PS3 and play games on it, it will soon effect you. Cause Sony will be charging us for their losses not only online but in offline games aswell, and all this caused by these low lifes. Its nothing opinionated if you like your system and games now, it will get worse for these idiots.

Didn't failoverflow technically do all the work discovering the root key and then Geo Hotz just got the info and published it? Either way, Geo Hotz pisses me off to no end. You'd think that someone who programs for a living would understand logic a little better. I paid for this console so that means I have the right to exploit it and circumvent Sony's security measures to offer an easy window for piracy to the public? Right.

Honestly, I don't know what makes me more angry, the fact that he's so smug or the fact that he thinks everyone's so stupid that they believe he didn't intend for this to lead to piracy. Even if that wasn't explicitly his intent, a smart guy like him should have known it would follow quickly. I almost take all this stuff personally because it's affected everyone who owns a PS3 at this point and he's wasted so much of Sony's time and money.

Ya failoverflow actually found it I think. And Geohotz was just pretending that he didn't know that it would lead to piracy because otherwise he would be in jail. He cracked it to get good rep from his low class basement dwelling friends. We should take it personally cause we are the ones that are gonna suffer, who has a life, and buy their games legit. I swear this kind of people are like the freaking talibans/hippie s**ts.

They're just bored and mean nothing to the society.LustForSoul

Exactly they don't offer anything productive to the soceity, all they do is provoke people and ruin things for everyone, just because their parents used to hit them when they were children or even now. It just makes me sick, these kinda people should be jailed, so something behind them can be decoded by a bearded convict.

Let me put it this way:

Imagine you work for some corporation. Let's say you ride your bike to work every morning. Let's say you lock this bike up outside your home. What Anonymous is essentially doing is putting an extra lock on your bike, not allowing you to go to work, get paid, and essentially fiddling with your life outside of work. Anybody that agrees with that is dead wrong, sorry. This isn't a matter of opinion, because when ones opinion starts affecting the lives of others, it is no longer an opinion. It goes back to the saying, You can have your opinion, as long as it doesn't affect mine.

Heirren

You are absolutely right. Gamers need to realise this and dump the stupid dongle. And show Sony that we are with them. So that they don't charge us for some lifeless idiots.
