My theory on Mario Kart's popularity

Here is my theory what caused Mario Kart to become No.1 selling racing game IP of all time?

In the 90's:

  • August 1992 - Mario Kart was born and released for Super Nintendo Entertainment System,
    • Sold over 8.7 million copies
    • 4th best-selling SNES game.
  • December 1996 - Mario Kart 64 released onto N64 about 6 months after it's initial launch
    • Sold over 9.8 million copies
    • 2nd best-selling N64 game.
  • November 1997 - Diddy Kong Racing (Mario Kart's cousin) was released on N64.
    • Sold over 4.8 million copies
    • 7th best-selling N64 game.
  • 1997-1998, kart racing fans who own PS1 and don't have N64, unsatisfied with realistic-looking PS1 racing games such as:
    • Gran Turismo
    • Colin McRae Rally
    • Need For Speed
    • Etc.
    • So they began to beg for a cartoony kart racer as equivalent to Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing for their console.
  • In June 1999, what they got is Crash Team Racing which many fans really enjoying it.

In the 2000s:

  • March 2000 - When Sony Playstation 2 was launch kart racing fans were hyped up and are expecting a CTR sequel to be superior to its predecessor.
  • July 2001 - Mario Kart Super Circuit was released for Nintendo Gameboy Advanced
    • Sold over 5.9 million copies
    • 4th best-selling GBA game.
  • August-November 2001 - When PS2 got a couple of realistic-looking racing games such as:
    • Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
    • Le Mans 24 Hours
    • WRC
    • Formula 1 2001
    • Test Drive: Off-Road Wide Open
    • Burnout
    • Etc.
    • Kart racing fans get really mad and desperate for kart racers on PS2.
  • September 2001 - Nintendo Gamecube launches
    • Kart racing felt regretted buying a PS2 for lacking kart racers on what they want.
  • November 15th, 2001 - The birth and launch of Xbox
    • Kart racing fans desperately want Xbox to get many kart racers as possible.
  • December 2001 - PS2 got a couple of cartoony kart racers like Bomberman Kart and kart racing fans say 'this is not the kart racer we want!'.
  • November 2003 - Mario Kart: Double Dash and Crash Nitro Kart releases onto stores.
    • Kart racing fans who don't have GCN, when they bought Crash Nitro Kart for their PS2/OG Xbox, they were disappointed for being an inferior sequel to its predecessor.
    • Also, Crash Nitro Kart (All platforms combined) wasn't that popular compared to Mario Kart: Double Dash which nearly 7 million copies.
    • Mario Kart Double Dash was also 2nd best selling GCN game.
  • November 2005 - Mario Kart DS and Crash Tag Team Racing releases onto stores.
    • Kart racing fans who don't have a GCN and DS, seeing Crash Tag Team Racing is released and get mad by saying something like 'That's it I'm boycotting the stupid PS3, Xbox 360 and PSP!, I'd rather buy Nintendo DS and Wii so I can play quality kart racers like Mario Kart!'.
  • In 2006 - The Nintendo DS gets even more popular, and the kart racing fans felt so much happier when they've bought it since they can play Mario Kart DS.
    • Mario Kart DS sold over 23.6 million copies
    • 3rd best-selling DS game.
  • November 2006 - The Nintendo Wii launches and the kart racing fans were so excited while waiting for Mario Kart Wii.
  • April 2008 - Mario Kart Wii launches
    • Kart racing fans were so happy and really enjoying it
    • They give comments like 'Mario Kart Wii is the best racing game ever!, forget whatever other boring PS3/360/PSP racing games!'
    • Mario Kart Wii sold over 37.24 million copies and surpassing all other racing games out there is.
    • 2nd best-selling Wii game.
  • In the 2010s:
  • 2010 - When PS3 and 360 releases their kart racer as answer to Mario Kart Wii (Modnation Racers and Kinect Joy Ride respectively)
    • When kart racing fans see these 2 and not satisfied with it
    • Also, photo-realistic racing fans weren't interested in Modnation and Joy Ride since they don't like kart racers and rather stay with Forza Motorsport/Gran Turismo.
  • March 2011 - Nintendo 3DS launches
    • Kart racing fans were so excited for it
  • December 2011 - Mario Kart 7 launches for 3DS
    • Kart racing fans say 'This is the best racing game on handheld and better than the rest of other racing games on Vita!'

    • Number 1 top-selling 3DS game.
  • November 2013 - When Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox One launches, then quite a lot of kart racing fans skipped Wii U.
  • May 2014 - Mario Kart 8 launches for Wii U
    • Kart racing fans who owns PS4/XB1 and skipped Wii U, this makes them want to beg for a kart racer for their console.
    • Sold over 8.44 million copies
    • Number 1 top-selling Wii U game.
  • May 2015 - One year after the release of Mario Kart 8, there is a Mario Kart clone called Beach Buggy Racing for PS4/XB1
    • When Beach Buggy Racing came out, kart racing fans weren't satisfied with it plus being inferior to Mario Kart.
    • Also, kart racing fans are mad that PS4/XB1 library of racing games are more to do with photo-realistic racing games rather than cartoony kart racers.
  • March 2017 - The Nintendo Switch launches and the kart racing fans who don't have Wii U, they feel much happier after buying it.
