The problem is that even on the hardest difficulty setting, (barring a few very rare exceptions) modern games are easy as hell.

Back in ye olde days if i tried playing a game on Ultra Hard (or whatever the hardest difficulty was) the game would slap me around and call me b****...

Now?

I'm zipping through stuff like it's on Beginner despite setting the difficulty to ULTRA HARD EXTREME!

@SolanOcard i agree with some of what you said, especially about Cliffy B kissing your arse... Seriously i hate the guy...

Games, however, don't need to be easy to be playable in this day and age... AI just needs to programmed better, game mechanics need to not suck (and rely on easy AI to make said crappy mechanics acceptable), controls need to be fluid and responsive etc etc and developers need to have more of a spine when the waves of QQ come pounding on their door because "blah blah blah is too hard WAAAAAAAH!!!".

@SolanOcard AI is not cheap...

AI involves more programming.

Also AI isn't incessantly slinging racial slurs at me or talking about wanting to have sex with my mom.

@incubus25 i think it has more to do with the fact that the audience was incredibly smaller than it is today.

Almost everyone and their grandma plays video games now and a lot of the new pool of players don't have the time and/or patience to deal with difficult games.

...Unfortunately that's the majority of the playerbase now and, not surprisingly, where all the money is.

I think Bleszinski's comments fall under the "NO F***ing S***!!!" category.
