I think if you consider Blizzard anything less than the best game company currently developing, then you're underrating them.

Blizzard has basically never produced a bad, mediocre or even mildly good game. Their worst effort in the past 10-15 years has probably been Warcraft III, which was still a high-AA or AAA title by most accounts. Meanwhile, they've created 3 of the most enduring franchises in gaming in Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. WoW in particular has handed them a license to print money and the ability to blow huge cash on getting the best of the best and producing only top-notch efforts for the conceivable future.

Bioware is very similar in this regard, as is Bethesda--both exclusively in the RPG genre. They are really pushing the boundaries and making superb games.

RTS's are already mainstream on the PC, since some of the most popular/legendary games and franchises of all times are in that genre. Starcraft/Warcraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, etc.

Perhaps Halo Wars will be the game that establishes the genre as mainstream-viable on consoles.

Yes, both consoles will keep producing better graphics but if you look at the history of consoles, at any given point in time their graphics can be ranked and that ranking will never change. Example, when Xbox was released it was better looking than the PS2 and even though the PS2 kept getting better and better the XB did as well and always held it's lead. Same thing now but reversed. In other words, you'll see GeOW-quality graphics on PS3 in a year or two but by then the 360 will have even better graphics.das_beck

I'm a 360 guy but this analysis isn't all that solid. The original xbox had consistently better graphics b/c it came out later and just featured better technology all around. The ps3 is in a similar position, although the graphics are currently being held back by the difficult architecture they designed with the Cell/RSX combo. Arguably, companies that maximize the system's capabilities will exceed anything the 360 can do. But I think this will only happen in games coming out late 08 or even afterwards, which means ps3 will have a lot of catch-up time.

Pretty undeniable. The proprietary engine that powers Motorstorm and the one that powers Forza 2 are probably the top-notch graphics engines for racing games but I doubt they can be applied to other sorts of games.

The DS and the Wii were part of a general Nintendo reinvention that didn't go for flasy tech and emphasized innovative gameplay elements.  That being said, whether the Wii has lasting power is still very up in the air--the handheld market doesn't have great graphics anyways, so it's not a big deal if the technology is inferior.  But the Wii's inferiority in power will likely be very telling in 2-3 years, and be a serious disadvantage over the 360 or the PS3 (which is a disaster right now).

I'd say only 1 flop there, in Red Steel.  If the other games had decent critical reception and sales, how are they flops?

I think that the "cheap" in that sense actually means in the sense of what you have to pay people to get them to work.  After all our minimum wage is pretty low.  That's why they pair the idea of cheap people w/ our natural resources, the idea is that America is a powerhouse economy b/c we have abundant labor + material.  Things tend to cost more in Britain because they have higher taxes, must ship and pay import fees, etc.

I'm not sure giving the consumer more choice qualifies as either a universally good or universally bad business move...but if you believe it is universally bad, I'm sure you're glad that the PS3 only offered it's uber-expensive 60 gb PS3 to many European nations.  No cheaper version to "confuse" the consumer.

I think the premium version is supposed to cost about 850 in component costs.

This is a fairly sound analysis but you have to remember that DMC is being released simultaneously on both platforms and LP and DR have been on xbox for a while now.  Timed exclusivity is better than being completely multiplat (although obviously true exclusivity is better than both--I get the feeling very few huge titles will really be truly exclusive; perhaps MGS4 to the PS3 and Halo 3 to the 360).
