Top Ten Overrated Games

These are games that, despite their high praise and acclaim, I just didn't see what the big deal was, or don't think they're as great as they promised. Now, I'm not calling you an idiot for liking them, as you have every right to enjoy what you want. I just didn't get into these games the way others did, which says more about my taste than it does yours.

Metal Gear Solid

Where do I start? It takes a relatively serious story and degrades it with corny forth wall humor, has interesting but broken gameplay mechanics, doesn't attempt to make its story the least bit cohesive, and spawned the single most disappointing franchise I've ever played. It's not a terrible game by any means, but it absolutely astounds me how much praise this choppy, unbalanced, and repetitive game gets.

The Legend of Dragoon

I tried this thinking it was gonna be a great nostalgia trip through the RPG greats of the PS1. Unfortunately, it's not great. It's bland. The combat is unbalanced as it forces you to take sweet time healing rather than fighting, has the clunkiest interface I've ever seen, a generic story I saw coming a mile away, and a cast of amazingly forgettable characters. People think this game is better than Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross? Wow. Just...wow.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Don't be mad, as this is a game I actually really enjoyed. The story is told well, and the character interaction was top-notch. I just hate how the progression is a copy/paste of Uncharted 2, includes a pointless set-piece in a cruise ship, and is inconsistent with its villain portrayal. It's a good game, but doesn't deserve such high praise I think.

Resident Evil

This is one of the grandfathers of horror? A game where you're heavily armed against slow-walking zombies, listening to the absolute worst voice acting on the PS1 (and that's saying something), and overall having the campiness override the horror? No thanks, I'll stick with Silent Hill.

Jak II

After the excellence that was The Precursor Legacy, I was almost immediately let down by Jak II. I hated the confusing design of the city, I couldn't get over the gun controls and how pointless they are, and I don't like how gritty the art style became as opposed to the colors used in the first game. While it isn't awful by any means, I was left so disappointed with what was a promising new franchise.

Halo 2

As far as the Halo franchise goes, this is the weakest entry to me. Ignoring the innovative multiplayer, the story was too vague and had too many plot holes, along with the worst cliffhanger I've ever seen. And people claim this game to be just as good as the rest of the series, if not better? Wow.

Half-Life 2

By no means is this a bad game. It has thoughtful level design, a great art style, a heavy atmosphere, and some memorable set-pieces. Everything else was...meh. Gordon Freeman is a confusing character who has a backstory but refuses to talk when he has every reason to say something. The mechanics are functional, but are nothing spectacular or groundbreaking. The story is interesting, but ultimately didn't do much to interest me. I can see why people like it, but I think it should come off its undeserved pedestal.

Metro: Last Light

As atmospheric and wonderfully artistic this game is, I think it's a boring FPS. The story didn't do anything to grab me, the mechanics were nothing special, the level design was much too linear for my liking, and the game's "morality" system was kept in the shadows when it shouldn't have. There's nothing wrong with a game having a good atmosphere and art style, but at least have your game be good in the process.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Again, another game where I can see the appeal, but I didn't care for it. It took too long for the world to open up, Roman is annoying, and the serious tone of Niko Bellic's heartbreaking and well-told story clashed too much with the hyper-satire of the GTA world. I just can't get over the clashing of story and sandbox mechanics, otherwise I might like the game.

Borderlands 2

As far as its writing is concerned, it's witty and got me to laugh hard a few times. Everything else was just boring. The combat was slow, the enemy AI was laughably stupid, and the guns just didn't feel all that powerful. I can see why others liked it, but it's not my thing.
