I'm about an hour in, and i have to say, i just don't understand.

This is just more Dark Souls. More of the same.

And it's not even particularly good Dark Souls, like Bloodborne or The Surge.

I guess you have a horse now, and you have to walk / ride your way to dungeons / Boss encounters instead of doing it in a straight line.

Oh and you collect berries and stuff to craft and upgrade your shit.

It doesn't even look all that good, I mean, unless your last game was Dark Souls 3. There's been some serious advancement in visuals since 2016.

I don't feel like 10/10, even as a "Must play" is fair. This game absolutely isn't a must play.

I mean, it's not terrible, but I feel like the last thing this industry needed right now was more Dark Souls.

Oh well.

POC lead character?

I'm genuinely curious, why do you believe that was a factor?

Is the game improved in any way by having a character who's skin pigmentation is darker?

Are you saying this because you, yourself, are a person of color?

This is a legitimate question. I have never heard anybody say a game was better as a result of any racial representation.

Keep in mind, i am not talking about culture here.

Cheers!

@lucidique: sure blame it on me why not.

All company seeks profit. Square are leaving the tried and true ATB system that garnered them so much success and love from fans. Them constantly trying to reinvent the series even though some hated it is objectively brave. Leaving the comfort zone of the genre they built even though their best selling ones were turn based games.

Personally I just realized nostalgia can be a curse.

What i am blaming you for is your attitude toward people that do not agree with you.

You not agreeing with me isnt ''moaning''. Your criticism is valid, even if i don't agree with it.

We can have a discussion, and respect each other's point of view.

''Reinventing'' a series is a relative term. If 343's next Halo game has basketball mechanics replacing the shooting, people are going to freak out. You may label them as ''brave'' for doing this all you want, they are alienating their player base.

Sports games enthusiasts are likely to be delighted, but the current fan base is likely to dislike the changes.

The same is happening with Final Fantasy. It is becoming something altogether different.

That's my issue with the series.

I still wish them the best, however.

@lucidique: I disagree. Just because you dislike the gameplay changes doesnt mean the charms of FF is lost. Only FF13 and FF15 fell bit short and many will still looks forward to next entry. To me its just dev being brave trying to innovate even though many times the changes drew backlash. I mean forget recent, FF8 draw system was absolute shit yet some reason people purposely blind due to nostalgia.

Luckily square still releases classic jrpg for fans of the genre like Bravely series started as FF spin off and have Tokyo RPG factory studio for those call backs. Not to mention DQ series.

It's not just the gameplay I dislike, but I digress, this is purely a matter of taste.

I disagree however, that trying to cater to the current demographic is in any way "Brave".

It is when you consider people like you constantly moaning why FF moved on from turn based gameplay. Square could have played it safe after FF13 disaster and how DQ still have place in modern gaming yet they still try to innovate the series. Personally they are being very brave even though it hurt some "oldschool" fans. Sure I love me some good old turn based FF but Square is ready to move on. FF14 ARR and FF7R got critical acclaim and personally I am hoping for more of those.

I'm not "moaning", i'm voicing my opinion.

You are part of the reason why these forums are dying. Constructive conversation cannot be had, because it doesn't align with your vision of things.

It's great that you love the series, more power to you for that.

You cannot be brave if your ultimate objective is to generate profits. The expression you were looking for is "Business savvy".

Honestly, this isn't even about the series moving away from turn-based mechanics. I just don't feel like trying to turn the series into "Devil May Cry with stats" is the right way to go about this.

@nisterraven: I have played absolutely none of these games.

Hopefully, they'll get some attention a year or two down the road.

In an attempt to contribute, in some way, to the discussion : Judging by everything i have seen so far, i believe it will come down to either Metroid or Resident Evil.

Deathloop looks passable, and there's no way in hell a Double Fine game is getting anything more than "Best art" in any award show, ever.

@GalvatronType_R: I expect a solid 7.5 to 8.0.

The multiplayer beta has provided insights into the general gameplay mechanics, and everything is pretty solid in that department.

My guess is we are getting something similar to Halo 5 Guardians : A solid campaign with very passable story.

Hopefully, i am proven wrong, but ultimately, if the campaign is fun to play, i can stomach a boring script.

We'll know soon enough!

I disagree. I think FF have its charm and all is equal. Square able to innovate the FF series while the rest you mentioned after first few sequels just unable to maintain the quality that popular series like FF, DQ and whatever still popular now.

You mean "had" it's charms, right?

The last few games are so far removed, in regard to gameplay, they can really only be called Final Fantasy in name.

Dragon Quest has had a longer standing remaining true to it's core JRPG gameplay roots, although it would appear the next opus could be a major departure from the serie's tried and true formula.

I wonder what the name Final Fantasy means to gamers that did not grow up in the 90s.

@RSM-HQ: How do they push you? Each day you don't play they give you another XP boost to catch up.

I think you mentioned the answer yourself, its thriving on addictive tendencies like giving an addict in a casino a free game. The XP boosts encourage the player to get back in as soon as they can and resume as Epic wants you too.

Out of all the F2P games I'd say Fortnite is the most fair and most respectful.

Respectful? nah, the whole model they have in place is designed to be manipulative.

Fair? sure, as the saying goes, all fair in love and war. It's not as bad a lootboxes.

I can accept that one, the model in place is doing Fortnites best to make sure we don't go elsewhere whenever possible, but it's not deleting account from inactivity like some games are known for. Epic just encourages players to catch up and give up on whatever else we may be doing. And I don't even think gameplay makes a large chunk of the player-base come back for more, it's the community, only takes one person out of ten to convince the other nine to keep playing Fortnite. It's the same with Call of Duty or Destiny.

Seems like this is more of an issue of social pressure within one's playgroup.

I buy battle passes, every once in a while, for a few games I play with different people. I don't always complete the passes, and i have learned to manage FOMO.

This format of monetization is just something we need to learn to live with.

Personally, as long as no gameplay mechanics are locked behind a paywall, i feel this is fair play.
