@chillingnaire:

I, too, hope this one is actually good. The first had a predictable story and uninspired gameplay. I was very disappointed.

Hopefully this one will not be as disappointing and actually deserve the accolades the first one received.

@CTBradums: One of the biggest problems, to me, with throwing out Rey's "royal" lineage (for lack of a better term) is that scenes from Episode 7 that were set up for part of the mystery suddenly don't make sense (the ship flying off, why was she abandoned?), nor does it explain the setup in Episode 8. Why Ren and her would have such a strong connection that they can see and feel one another in the room, even if they're across the galaxy, if they didn't have some sort of familial connection, in addition to the Force?

@vega2505: Solo was the definition of mediocre. It has some entertaining parts, but it didn't need to exist and didn't add anything meaningful. It could have been a lot better, though I still think a Lando movie would have been far more interesting.

@Hagan: This is pretty much the main problem with Episode 8. It did not develop the characters in any meaningful way and what character development did happen was completely at odds with what had already been established for those characters. Luke, in particular, does not fare well, although Kylo Ren being reduced to some whiny goth brat certainly doesn't help, either. There is no story thread left over and no character I am interested in anyway.

@spuurnge: While I largely agree with your criticisms of Episode 8, Johnson has shown himself to be a more than capable filmmaker outside of TLJ.

If anyone, the blame should be laid at the feet of Lucasfilm for letting the movie happen the way it did. Either they should have had some over-arching story they were trying to tell with the new trilogy, or they shouldn't have bothered and just made stand-alone movies.

@johnd13: This was one of the most egregious errors Episode 8 made. It not only short-circuited all the story and character arcs from Episode 7, but then it failed to introduce any new ones. The movie ends with a whimper and gives me no reason to see another.

@skippert: Agreed. In fact, the problem with her parentage is so minor compared to the other glaring faults in the movie that I almost forget about that one when I'm going over how bad.

@ZIMdoom: I think your take that the trilogy is about Ren is interesting, but we'll have to agree to disagree that he's the most interesting character. I find Kylo Ren the most uninteresting, underwhelming character in the Star Wars legacy, and yes, I realize that includes Jar-Jar.

So anything is possible. He could be good or he could be bad. That's two possibilities. Also, the previous movies already had the whole "any kid could be a Jedi" angle. IIRC, the prequels had a ton of this, actually. The opportunity to divorce the series from the Skywalker saga was always there; Disney chose to rope them back in to appeal to OG fans and sell them on the new series. If they didn't want the movies to be about them, they shouldn't have made that choice, rather than start it off that way, then blow it up half way through.

This also ignores serious flaws in TLJ, that you just wash away with a "I know they're not perfect." I certainly don't expect perfection, but I would like something that is tonally consistent, that doesn't betray its established characters, that doesn't have subplots that go nowhere yet a huge chunk of the run-time, and don't have world/galaxy/universe breaking mechanics (I'm looking at you, stupid death-by-hyperspace scene).

And none of this acknowledges that most of these things that you liked could still be accomplished in TLJ or in any other SW movie (Rogue One did a great job expanding the universe), but it doesn't take away from the fact that TLJ, as it is, is still a terrible movie and an even worse Star Wars movie.

@Berserk8989: I hated episode 8 for a variety of reasons. I think it's a bad movie and an even worse Star Wars movie. It suffers from tonal inconsistency, poor character development (and character development that undermines previous entries), an uninteresting story, "surprise" moments that had no dramatic underpinnings or context, and just plain bad writing. There's also a moment or two that completely "breaks" Star Wars (in particular, I'm thinking of the infamous death-by-hyperspace scene). Because of it, I have absolutely 0 interest in episode 9.

That said, I am intrigued by the possibilities of his new trilogy, as well as D&D's trilogy. It's where Disney needs to go. Enough of the Skywalker saga and the OG characters. Disney needs to start creating its own stories and characters and make its own mark on the Star Wars universe.
