Oh, and here's a comment from a Capcom employee confirming the existence of DLC keys (in his argument that the RE5 DLC wasn't a key):

[quote="Christian Svensson"]Keys are 100K or less. It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc.lowe0

And before you say "Capcom-Unity.com? Is that even an official site?":

Hmm...allright. So unlock keys do exist. I admit I was wrong. Nice job actually finding some proof.

Now find some proof that developers are charging for them as DLC...

No, I do. We all do. That's what we've been trying to grind into your head for the whole thread. I've created games myself, I know damn well what sizes are actual content and which are just short lines of code. 108KB is a short script. Again, I'll repeat: It is impossible to have a 108KB file with actual game content in it. This is not my speculation, this is a fact. If you want proof just try to find a game that's as small as 108KB. Go to google and search for "108kb game". Oh, guess what comes up? Pages upon pages of talk about 108kb unlock DLC. Gee, wonder why that is...

Heck, you won't even find a flash game as small as 108kb. You know why? Because even the webpage that the game is loaded on is bigger than 108kb. Seriously. See this webpage my post is on? The one you're looking at right now? Go ahead and save it. You'll find that the page, including all of it's assets, is about 1.3 megabytes in size which is 13x bigger than the file you claim contains game content. Hell, even just the code for this one tiny webpage is ~300kb in size, which is still 3x larger than the DLC in question.

You seem to be under the impression that a developer can magically make files as big or small as they want. This isn't the case, and it shows just how uninformed you are about this subject. Saying that it's possible to produce game content out of a 108kb file is like saying it's possible to build a 50 story sky scraper with a 4x4 plank of wood and a brick.

gameguy6700

Sure, I believe you create games. Not really.

When you guys show me proof, I'll believe you. Until then, keep spouting your beliefs and I'll keep laughing at you.

I've made simple little javascript games. It's not difficult, I did it back when I was in middle school and early high school. Even those simple java games though were still larger than 108kb.

Anyway, we've all given you proof, you just aren't willing to actually consider what we're telling you.

Sure ya did. I believe you....0_o

Anyways, no. You havent given me proof. You've given me size comparisons and speculation. I can still debunk it.

Proof is IRREFUTABLE. Something BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. I DO have a father who is a lawyer. I help him out from time to time when Im not on call as an EMT. You guys got nothin.

Actually, there's a very simple way to prove that there are DLC key files: if you play online against someone who doesn't have it, does it still show up? If so, then it has to be on your system (either on the disc or as part of a title update). And if it's on your system, but you can't play it, then what's missing? That's right, a DLC key file.

For a practical example, that's why Burnout Paradise patches are so large. Whether you buy the DLC or not, everyone has to have it, so that when one player uses it the other players can see the car they're driving.

lowe0

What do you mean, "does it still show up?" Does what show up?

A patch is not DLC.

Sure. Follow these steps:

  1. Purchase, rent,or borrowa stock copy of Burnout Paradise (not the Ultimate Box) for the Xbox 360. Do not purchase any DLC.
  2. Patch it to the latest version.
  3. Start a multiplayer game
  4. Invitesomeone who has purchased DLC cars.
  5. Ask them to switch to a DLC car, such as the Jansen P88. Observe that you can see them driving around in the DLC car. This proves that the content is on your system.

OR that proves that they bought the DLC and you didnt. Just because you can see it doesnt mean its on your disc. Its the internet. Its on THEIR disc and you can see it because they have it.

  1. Attempt to switch to that car yourself. Observe that you cannot. This proves that having the content on your system is insufficient.
  2. Finally, purchase the DLC containing the car in question.Observe that the file size is 108KB.

Again with the file size argument.

Okay, so that proves the existence of key files. They're the 108KB file that you downloaded that the game looks for before allowing you to use the content already on your system.

No, it proves that you can see someone elses DLC over the internet...which we already knew.

Now, what's so significant about 108KB? Well, if you take a look at the size of all of the Burnout Paradise DLC

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80245410806/?of=3

You'll see that they're all 108KB. They're all just a single file to unlock the DLC; none of them contain the content in question. Once you notice these 108KB files, you start seeing them in plenty of other games. Heck, take a look at Dead Rising:

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802434307d2/?of=3

They flat-out admit it's a key, right in the name!

The size of a file is not admitting its a key. Maybe its just THAT small. How do you know its really already on the disc? Because of its size? Sorry, thats not enough to convince me.
