ARG! I CAN'T MAKE IT TONIGHT! :(
Arguing whether Duke Nukem is sexist or not shouldn't be the main focus. The real issue that should be confronted is whether sexist content should even make it into video games. The creative people of the game industry should have the freedom to create a misogynistic character, as well as to create a misandrist one. As much as I hate being pigeonholed into the "sexist male gamer crowd," content like Duke Nukem has the right to exist. Like all content, it's not for everyone so people have to be cognizant and critical as to what they and younger, impressionable people are exposed to. Simply reverting to cutting out content like this is akin to "not thinking."
great interview. he really sounds like he takes his craft seriously, pours everything into the process and detail in getting the sound just right. I can't imagine how amazing BF3 will sound - I almost want to buy a decent sound system when it comes out!
GLaDOS is my favorite villain of recent memory precisely for one of the reasons you stated above: presence. She was with you every step of your journey, from waking up in a sleeping chamber until her destruction by your own hands (at least in Portal 1). Everything you see and hear, from white walls and companion cubes, to her omnipresent voice, remind you that you are in her world - a world that began at the hands of Aperture Science but has long since been taken over by her. And as you progress through the test chambers, you slowly began to get hints of what lies behind the white walls and the humanity beind GLaDOS, however distorted it may be (even if she is a form of artificial intelligence). The unraveling of her personality as the end of the game approached, culminating in the best ending song ever, is probably why I still think of GLaDOS fondly. Can't wait for Portal 2!
Anyone else get the feeling this year's E3 is gonna be awesome??
Oh the Gameboy... *tear... So many memories on that handheld I've always said that if I were to be stuck on an island and hand to bring only one gaming system and one game, it'd be the Tetris on Gameboy, 'cause I can play it forever.
That's right GS! Stick it to Ebert!
