@zero_juice: I think the the reason is that The Force Awakens was the revival of the Star Wars franchise, and was marketed as such. The prequels were not well-received, so the Force Awakens had a lot riding on it, possibly why they played it so safe, but it's undeniable that it was a landmark film designed to introduce Star Wars to a new generation and attempt to undo the damage done by the prequels. The excitement around "the return of Star Wars" is what generated so much hype, got everyone talking and made so many people go and see it in cinemas, whereas most people I know haven't even heard of Rogue One.
@MrGeezer: I think what the guy above meant was that fans would still say that, but people wouldn't make a big deal out of them saying that and wouldn't call them sexist.
@handheldhimself: I'm not sure anyone can have a "solid reason" for being gay/lesbian, they just are. I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think a character's sexual orientation needs to be justified with any reason or back story because that's not how it is in real life.
I don't think we needed another Superman movie, but a standalone Batman movie with a few easter eggs and possibly a cameo would have made the transition into Batman v Superman a lot smoother.
