Fish = Kaufman... hahaha, man this week is just blazing through one idiot after another popping up making completely stoopid comments.

I'm trying to remember people like Carmack and Chris Roberts exist, people that are genuinely creative and have a REAL interest and knowledge of culture/art/technology... you know, true leading minds... but man, this week is a good week to start thinking game developers are absolute morons.

"you were trending on twitter"... yeah, that's a great measure of professional integrity and achievement right there.

Fucking idiots. hahahaha

@ThePope2k6 I meant TV pre WW1 as an invention, before they layed out the infrastructure.

Films aren't told as a package though, you're wrong there. Things have gone back to how they were, it's just a hazy definition with all these conglomerate loopholes. What seems like horizontal integration has turned back into vertical (as well as horizontal). All the major cinema chains are conglomerate owned, and like the conglom owned studios, the new business model is to share it arund amongst themselves. From an executive level, it's gone back to being completely in house again.

But when you bring the piracy debate into play too, it destroys his analogy even further. Gaming piracy claims are largely doctored, and they never take into account how a lot of piracy for games is treated as a demoing process for future purchases. That doesn't happen for most music and films. People consume what they download then go "meh, I don't think I'll bother watching/listening to that again, so why should I pay."

Or to bounce back to whatever era Dyack is thinking of in his head. Hollywood back in the day was competing with an alternate media delivery they had no control over... what are gaming companies dealing with? Iphones and Android games? The only risk to AAA publishers is indie development and kickstarter projects. Indie projects ultimately still strengthen the medium they're dominating at the moment, no matter what the platform.

Hopefully he puts more effort into making his game than he has into history and economics. His arguments might work if taken at face value by the general gaming public that doesn't keep up with the actual industry side of things, but actually contemplating what he really means... he doesn't know what he's talking about.

@ThePope2k6 if he wasn't just talking out of his arse, he'd have actually said 1950's. The post war economy is where Hollywood was massive.

But their risk margins were minimal too. This nitwit doesn't seem to be clued in on the concept of vertical integration, a business model PERFECTED by those big studios during that golden era.

He also doesn't seem to be aware of the monopolistic nature of that system which literally suffocated anyone that was 'indie'. Hence, the comparison is absolutely nonsensical.

He's an idiot, he hasn't got a clue about film history or film economics... he hasn't even done a half arsed google search. He's just making this shit up in his head.

Incidentally, this 1920's date of his, films were still B&W and 'sound' was still the big innovative thing. Although TV was already becoming a bit of an old invention (from memoy it was the head of MGM, or RCA that wanted to deploy tech at the same time cinemas were really becoming more than just a side alley novelty, pre WW1... obviously that didn't happen, but it's a very interesting side of film/media history that most people haven't got a clue happened.) The rise of television wasn't the death nail to the golden monopoly era of Hollywood like wiki-youtube quality history may suggest.

He's WAY off about film, and film is an easy industry to learn about.

HAHAHAHA.

**** me, this is the dumbest bit of developer ignorance I've seen yet.

Cleopatra and Ben Hur.. golden age? Seriously? This was in the fuckin 1920's?

Somebody break out a calendar for these morons and a link to IMDB. Learn some basic history about the actual topic you're speaking of before vomiting out all this shit. It's not that hard in this day and age. Everything this dude said in his film analogy is absolute bullshit. NONE of that is true. Not the numbers, not the magical $$$ conclusion he's come to about studios and their attitude towards those "golden era" epics.

The games industry is NOTHING like the film industry. This is yet further proof... no class, not intelligence, no consistent work ethic.

Pump out more than one FULL game in a single year, maybe then you'll start the foundations of being comparable to filmmakers.

And to think I was actually considering backing their kickstarter. I for one won't fund 'stoopid' in this world.

@VoidSECT well, going off his appearance that Indie Game movie and his twitter posts, it seems safe to say he's more than just stressed. It looks like he's a very negative person that can't live without being the victim.

I've known plenty of people like that. You know the kind that can't have peace and quiet in their lives, they HAVE to have drama even if they have to go out of their way to stir it all up. Self destructive.

In this case it seems like minds have found each other. Look at some of the nasty posts below, his twitter posts were at least as petty and vile, if not moreso at times.

It's a sad little melodrama

@phbzbut isn't that the point of why this is so ridiculous? If this was truly so beneath him, he wouldn't have engaged in the shit slinging.

When I hear annoying tweens voiping in a game (CS:GO today), I disconnect from that match. I don't waste my time being exposed to such stupidity, and my life is better for it.

He engaged them, and in the gaming world of morons, that means "yes, come into my home and shit on my pillows. let's see where this takes the both of us." He's no better or worse than the trolls that attacked him.

@VoidSECT eccentrric implies an element of genius and weirdness.

Eccentric don't sit online flaming trolls on twitter, telling them to go kill themselves.

Fez looks nifty, not much more. It's far from genius. Eccentric should never be used to excuse behaviour like his. Like others have mentioned, Primadonna is the more appropriate term.

Maybe the best way to judge the situation is, with his attitude, and looking at his Twitter responses he's as much of a screen troll as his attackers... how far would he have gotten with both his attitude and his slow work ethic back in the shareware days. Coding Fez in today's environment isn't like coding the Doom 1 iDtech engine back under MS-DOS. The amount of time to build his game... how much attention he got from going to fully fledged indie game cons, easy online access to press and customers?

1993?... he wouldn't have made it past the first or second build.

There's nothing genius or special about him riding the indie coattails of Minecraft and Braid. I don't get why 'indie fans' are treating Fez like it's some sort of major achievement. He's no Carmack, he's no Mojang-dude.. the one that wears the fedora, can't remember his name.

@Cloud_imperium that's how I got sucked into playing the first Torchlight.

I've been resisting the urge to play the 2nd because I know I'l start losing track of time... time I can't spare right now. Yet it sits on my steam list going "come on, just install me and leave me there, let's see what happens."

@auron11022 it is the dominant factor behind why it's happening though. Invite imbeciles to the dinner table and expect them to behave like the civilised adults sitting to the left and right of you? And Activision has been very aggressive in marketing to the widest, and lowest common denominator with CoD and all it's "honoring the troops" bullshit.

The manager standing up for his employee is kind of moot too, because what is he exactly standing up for/to? There is no injustice here, no element of oppression or adversity. It's just a bunch of whiny little shits that live infront of their computers/consoles that think they're uber bad arse spec ops material in the making cause they know how to grief in multiplay.

An online flame annoyance that is starting to make the developers feel so dirty over the fact that THIS is who their primary audience has become. Remember when Mass Effect 3 was getting flamed hard and a dude said none of the BioWare employees read the forums because it's just "too depressing"? Blizzard, another example of masses of negativity from their core forum crowd.

Within their own forums, that's where they have true control over the community they allow to cultivate... this shows you where their priorities have been. Don't upset pappa Kotick by alienating a SINGLE idiot. Speaking up now... it's too late.

Makes me think Planet of the Apes. Tragic and irreversible.
