Don't know weather to glad or mad. Is it possible to be both? :? I just read the update on Splinter Cell Conviction and it's been delayed,AGAIN!!!I really hope this is the last time it will be pushed backed! At least I'll have time to catch up on all the other games I've missed out on for so long. I've been hording up several games in anticipation of the day that I would finally have a gaming PC again. I haven't even played HALO 2 yet because I refused to get Vista! I was in the middle of playing S.T.A.K.E.R. Clear Sky when my computer got zapped. I've got Tomb Raider Underworld and F.E.A.R. Origin and of course I have to still get COD MW2. Wow, I guess it isn't such a bad thing to have to wait a couple more months for Conviction! I need to hurry up and get this thing together, I'm very behind!

The Prolimatech Megahalems and the Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 (TRUE) are two of the best cpu coolers out (can be found at frozencpu.com). I can't really help you any with making a custom case or modding one. Congrats with the with your build and let us know when it is finished. Good luck on the case. You could try painting it in the Marine's camouflage pattern with or without the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.jtcraft
My first choice for the CPU cooler is the Megahelms but my finale choice will depend on what case I end up getting. I've been inspired by all the modding research I've been doing lately and I have in mind a theme that for now I shall keep under wraps until I have figured out the details. It will be awesome though, if I can manage to create anything near what is rolling around in my head!

its an excellent build but if want more graphic power, you could put in a phenom II 965 wich would bring down the price a fair bit and then u could pick up one of those tasty 5970's also if you want to mod ur case, i heard the nzxt tempest evo's are very good for modding and they look excellent when modded. Oh and one more thing, intel's ssd usually comes to be a bit more faster than other brands. happy building! Thanks for your input, but I will remind you that I have already bought all the components EXCEPT for the case and CPU cooler (re-read my update post that you quoted above). I may or may not build my own case, I haven't really decided. Finances and impatience will play the biggest role in deciding which path to take. I'm getting real anxious to get this thing together and running because I'm VERY back logged on my playing my "wish list" games and the one I've REALLY been waiting for, Splinter Cell Conviction, will be out in a few weeks. I WANT TO PLAY MY GAMES ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (Sorry, I've been suffering from FPS Syndrome and gaming withdrawal symptoms for several months. I just don't know how I've survived this long!)

You may already know this, but be sure to sand (or sand blast) off and prime the interior before adding a few coats of paint. I've seen this step skipped a lot, only to find that the final product is very prone to chipping paint.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Xaser is the case that I had picked out on my wish list but they didn't carry it at the store I went to but they did have the NZXT Tempest Evo although I believe it is only a mid-tower and my GPU didn't fit. I know my daughter would love the orange theme. She's crazy about orange and I like the Half Life theme too. I was actually thinking more along the lines of a high tech military/Marine theme, possibly with multi-colored lighting. There is an acrylic manufacturing company in my area where I know I can get custom made materials if I needed to. I'm going to do some more drawings and figuring to see if I can come up with some thing. If not I will probably get the Xaser and do some modding to it, starting with painting the interior black. eikone

Thanks for the advice on painting the case. I'm still weighting my options.

well since it now only to a case she need well she seem determined on good looking case id understand then either she get an already modded case from frozen cpu (Expensive and not airflow wise) or similar or buy an great Looking Full tower if she doesn't want the HAf 932 / Azza Solano

Although the Azza Solano from a looking seem to have a issue it doesn't have 7 / 10 fan position possible as HAF 932 and probabely less good cable routing so less airflow for a good looking case from my perspective you have to be able to see trough the fan / grill / inside with a window panel so you can see the great material you have in ur case without remove the panel

But you can sure paint lot of case : and i like the picture iv seen by Ultimategamerr95 of the Orange LED : it make different and creative but i dislike the size it onyl a medium size she could find similary mod in full tower all done on ebay how ever or she could mod it her self to the color led / painting she like

if you want a clean case keep in mind to buy a Modular PSU so you don't have 4-5 sata cable and bunch of unused cable all messed in ur case : how ever with good cable routing you can minimize the wire stack

Also if you can find a Samsung spinpoint F3 1TB : buy this instead of the Black Caviar it much faster and samsung are as well known to be trust-worthy hdd they hardly ever break from what i heard and if you'd like this pc to last until 2012-2013 with all the bunch of new feature tech you can plug it Well id look forward a USB 3.0 / SATA III Ready's Such as the Gigabyte X58 UD7 at 350$ Link below's
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128413&Tpk=UD7

and if it was of my money id probable like wait for the SSD SATA 3.0/III : sure it FAST : but SATA III SSD are to come soon and they will surely bring up to 100-200MB/S faster by then but if you want the speed right now : you might go with the SSD You chosen and install ur OS / Game on it and all ur miscellaneous thing / low priortiy game on the 1TB

I think you may have misunderstood. I already bought all the components except for the case and cpu cooler. I did get a different mobo than what was on my newegg wish list (see my wish list link on a previous post) but I believe this one will do and still has plenty of upgrade value for a substantial amount of life. I did get a SSD and I am planning to use it for running the OS and my business /work programs and I will use the HDD for gaming and lesser programs and tasks. If I feel I have a game that would really benefit from being run on the SSD then I may use it for that particular game. I have made it a habit to remove a game when I'm finished playing it so that I never have a bunch of games loaded on my pc at a time.

you really gotta know what you're doing if you're gonna make a case....:Psmc91352
I know, that's why I'm asking for help in learning. :D I'm very good at figuring out things and I would never try something until I felt that I had enough knowledgeable info on it. I have an engineering and architect mind and I'm an artist so I do believe I could do it if I set my mind to...

Ok, I have bought the "guts" of my new build but I still need a case and cpu cooler.

I've been out of town for the last 3 week taking a wide span road trip to visit family through the holidays (and beyond). Started in Indiana and went to Tenn, NC, and VA. Just got home yesterday. I took a copy of my wish list with me just in case I might come across something along my travels and boy I'm glad I did! On my way back to IN, I stop for a little driving break at a Best Buy store. They had a pc that they could order in store that was half way decent and so I got a copy of their specs and took it along with my wish list to one of the "Geeks". This guy was surprisingly honest and told me that my list was much better and I should stick to it. Then he told me of a retail store where I could probably find everything on my list for even less. The place was Micro Center and they had a store just about 20 miles from there, right along my route, in Columbus, OH. So I looked it up on my Navigator phone and headed straight there. I'm sure some of you more experienced techies already know about them but I was so excited to find this place, I felt like a fat kid in a candy store!

With the help of a knowledgeable associate, I made a few modifications to my list and trimmed some "fat" (my pc cash stash shrunk a bit during my trip, unfortunately) but I'm happy to have finally took the plunge and now there's no turning back and I can't chicken out of this DIY build now.

I'll be saving up (or waiting for a tax refund) to add some of the extras that I couldn't get now.

Here's what I've got:
MOBO - Asus P6T
PSU - Kingwin 660w, Lazer Premium Series
CPU - Intel CORE i7-920
GPU - VisionTek Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity
Memory - OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1600
HDD - WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA
SSD - OCZ Vertex Series 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC
DVD Drive - Samsung SH-S223C DVDRW Drive (inexpensive drive just for function till I can get my Blu-Ray drive)

Now, I just need the case and cooler.

I wonder if any of you have tried building a custom mod case? I've seen a some pretty awesome designs (and some pretty weird and down right ugly ones too). I have an idea and material that I think could be used for one but that's an even bolder undertaking than what I've already begun, but, I am the adventurous type that loves a challenge and learning something new! Please don't tell me I can't do it cause that means I'll HAVE to do it (LOL). Seriously though, if anyone has experience in this and/or knows where I can get info I would love for you to share. I've found plenty of resources for supplies, just need instruction.

How can the Acme Company stay in business with out these guys?
