If you want something a little more hold your hand and EZ mode try Dawn of War? But yeah, avoid Company of Heroes because it will make you really bad at any other RTS games. CoH is a shallow and laugh-worthy strategy game.SKaREO
Why is CoH a "laugh-worthy" strategy game? IMHO it's pretty good.

Get Company of Heroes ASAP You could also consider: Rise of Nations - a very good game, underrated though. It's similair to Age of Empire but has more time periods. Homeworld - a trully unique game. Empire Earth - like Age of Empires but on steroids. Features every single time period in human history - from the Stone Age to the far future (robots, spaceships, cyber ninjas and all that good stuff). Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Sins of a Solar Empire

You could try any of the three Gothic games (stay away from the 4th game - Arcania, as far as possible, it's downright horrible) All of them are open world, action orriented and are pretty challanging (especially the first 2 games). The first game has a terrific story and atmosphere. Graphically, it doesn't look good by today's standards. The second game is very much like the first one but it has a lot more content (quests, locations, characters, crafting and stuff to do). The story is a bit generic and you'll be confused at the beginning if you havent played the previous game. The third game features the biggest open world in the series. You can go to any location in the world from the start. There's plenty of combat in this one and magic/spells gameplay is also the most robbust. Graphically, it looks gorgeous. Storywise it's not as good as the other two games.

Ever since the first Mass Effect, Bioware games have been a bit too Hollywoodish for my taste. It didn't help that the different franchises began to share way too many similarities (DA 2 was a medieval Mass Effect and the plot in ME3 was pretty much the same as DA:Origins - spend the entire game uniting all the different races and then fight the baddies at the end).

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series are amazing. Definitely check them out if you haven't done so already. Lesser known but still a solid open world FPS game is Xenus White Gold.

Warcraft 3 is a good choice, but I don't know whether the game's online community is still alive though. If you've never played a Diablo game I'd highly recommend you get the second one. If you are looking for some brainless unadulterated fun try Postal 2. If you are in the mood for something unique and different try Homeworld. The game still looks really good and should run smoothly on your computer. Dungeon Keeper 2 and Populous the Beginning are also really good games with fresh and unique gameplay. Games like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Fallout 1/2, Morrowind, Planescape Torment and etc, that were mentioned before here, have aged rather poorly, so there is a good chance you won't like them, unless you are very open minded and ready to endure high amounts of initial frustration.
