This place is pretty pro-Nintendo, isn't it?

I had a ips tv for years and now I bought a new bigger TN one and I can't see the difference between them. I'm glad I'm not affected by such petty things.
So I take it you believe this is a good practice, that should continue going forward, on every Nintendo console?
Fair enough. I can respect that.
Sony did it with the Vita IIRC
I thought the Vita just went from OLED to IPS?
Which is still a huge downgrade, mind you, but if they started using TN panels it would be pretty freaking jarring.
Yes, still downgraded the panel
Not exactly the same, is it? They downgraded the panel to significantly drop the price of the console. And you know what you get when you purchase the thing, you either buy the OLED model or the IPS model (I think it's called the Slim or whatever). Having IPS can actually be a plus, because it allows for some great battery life.
Here, you have no idea what you're bringing home with you. You can't test it at the store, you can't do anything.
And there is no advantage in getting a TN panel, in this instance. At least not that I can see. If you get TN, you're just fucked, end of story.
Seriously, there's the "Master Race", there's the "peasants", and then there's the people with TN panel 3DS.
They don't just get a small screen, they get the absolute shittiest one available too. Just so Nintendo can save some money.

Hope you don't realize tv companies do this too. It's a sleazy world out there of panel lotteries. I spent a looooot of time trying to circumvent the great Samsung's and ensure I got the 1 of 4 panel types I wanted in my TV
With TVs I usually just check DisplaySpecifications. They are normally right, but if they aren't, there is a test (well two tests actually) you can do at the store to determine if something is IPS or VA.
As demonstrated here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3vf48DUafM
Well they never advertised you'd get IPS screen on 3DS..lol..so yea it is just luck which batches of 3DS comes with IPS & TN ..not sure what you're whinging about, you were just unlucky. IF they advertised IPS screen on 3DS & you get TN ..then I understand.
Yeah, sucks to be me I guess. Pay the exact same, and the color vibrancy on my friend's 3DS is just something to behold. While I get that "incredible pop" that only a TN panel can produce...
Not even whinging, this is a straight-up shitty practice by Nintendo.
@foxhound_fox
LOL WUT indeed. It's because of shit like this that I don't like to browse ResetEra.
I was much happier thinking it was all in my head.
Ok, so to this day I never knew that you could get two perfectly identical 3DS with different types of screens. One IPS and the other TN.
And that the kind of screen you get is completely a matter of luck.
This is some seriously scummy shit. I've been claiming that my 3DS looks like crap for months, even thought it was all in my head... turns out I got dual TNs, as opposed to my friend who got dual IPS.
Like, I have a TN "gaming" monitor. It looks like crap, but it's got a good refresh rate so I'm not bothered. It gets the job done.
But here I see absolutely no advantage in going TN. Especially against something like IPS. No wonder the viewing angles were abysmal.
Nintendo, please...
"Is there an indie bias on the media?"
Everyone knows that yes, there is a bias. And it isn't exactly small.
