thats right. most pc gamers are not so fanboyish and just stick to one platform. though naughty dog games are really not something i got a console for. i like to play sport and eastern games on consoles. shooter and almost all action games are better on pc. i dont mind that i dont want to play uncharted. i played through uncharted 2 and it was fucking boring ^^
There is no reason to spend 100 more bucks on slower hardware but being a fanboy. and because most gamers/consumers are not fanboys, microsoft will have a hard time selling console hardware, that is only targeting its fanboybase, which still cant get enough of halo and forza.
Than again, why should they make different file types? When they use a slightly different engine it should not be too hard to convert save states. A save state only has story progress, coordinates of player (where he saved) and other player stats (like item and weaponload). Especially in a linear, scripted game its just a lame excuse not to be able to convert a save game. Its not like they have to convert genoms. Its harder to program any sort of animation than this.
Is there any sensible reason why you cant carry over your save states to a new platform? If I buy a new PC I can still use my old save games from my old PC. All of them. I can even go to a friends house and download save games from my Steam Cloud on his PC and they are still working fine. So I dont get why save games cant work on different console hardware. Whats the point?
When it comes to OS, they only had this market share because there was no serious competitor. MacOS was always too expensive and barely supported any third party software. Linux was too complicated to handle, had no game support and no marketing.
SteamOS instead could be very attractive for everyone who didnt want to port to Linux because it didnt support games. This could cost Microsoft a lot of market share, especially since Valve has enough money to advertise their OS.
Microsoft also does not have unlimited amounts of money. They will even make further huge losses since Google and Apple are dominating the mobile market.
