Today I turned on my xbox as usual (same xbox for 3 years). It's really hot outside, and the AC wasn't on, and after about 5 minutes of playing, the xbox just shut off by itself and 2 red lights went off. This never happened before, so I went online and checked what it meant, and it was because of overheating. So I kept it off, turned on the AC, and after about 2 hours, it was as cool as it gets. Now after five minutes of playing, it shut off AGAIN. I checked it, and it was still cool! I played again, and soon enough, it shut off. Still cool, and during play even cool air was coming out of the fan. I've also noticed an irregularly loud fan noise, much louder than I'm used to. Any help? Sorry for the wall of text, but I hate getting these two red lights when it's not even overheating anymore.narmi819
It might just be normally overheating, or it might be that the heat sinks have come up off the console enough that they're not working. The exact same thing happened to me. I tried towel tricking the 360, but I just said screw it, told the guy my 360 red ringed, and hoped they didn't check it since I was out of the original 1 year warranty that covers all problems.

For the record, that poll is complete bull. Nobody I know has gotten a new console. Every single one of them has either gotten their same console back, or gotten one that's obviously refurbished (see: external wear, production date is too long ago, etc). I'm pretty sure they don't give new consoles back anymore unless they've actually run out of refurbed units (very rare), and I'd be willing to bet anybody who says they got one either (A) doesn't know how to check the production date on their console to see if it's the same or it's refurbed, or (B) their just fanboys supporting their console, which is inevitable anywhere you go. These days, they don't even give you a box or packing materials. How can you expect them to give you a new console? No, seriously. A couple of people I know who have had their console break recently have had to get their own box, packing materials, and print out the packaging information. It used to be they give you a crappy box and packing materials you have to set up yourself, which was an inconvenience from the beginning. But this is just ridiculous. One of those two people had to wait an extra couple of weeks (on top of the standard 3-4 week return) because he supposedly set up the box and stamp incorrectly. Maybe if you didn't cheap out and actually sent him a damn cardboard box and a big ol' sticker that says where the hell it's going, you wouldn't get into this problem. >_> Anyway, I've had my 360 for under 2 years now (it'll be 2 in December), and I'm on my second 360. Though with the issues I'm having with the disc drive not opening and the random freezes I may need to fake the RROD or towel trick it and get my third. Let's hope it doesn't happen during the Gears 2 launch, just like it broke the first time during the GTA IV launch. Though if it happens in October it's cool since I'll be playing LittleBigPlanet anyway. As long as it gets back before Gears 2 then it's whatever.
