The notion that a mother bird won't accept a chick after it's been picked up and put back in the nest by a human is a complete myth. Birds have an extrememly underdeveloped sense of smell, and so cannot detect the scent of a human on the chick. Even if it could, there would be no inhibition towards caring for the chick.
