Children to design a national park in Minecraft
Adelaide schoolchildren were asked to design the idea of a Minecraft national park that could be constructed in real life.
Students aged between nine and twelve were asked to design their own 3D models within the world.
The results could be used to improve existing national parks around Adelaide.
The government has provided nearly $10.4m Australian dollars (PS5.4m) to redesign the.
It was keen to find a new way to involve young people in its processes.
"This competition is part of a project to engage the community asking people of all ages what sort of facilities would inspire them to spend more time in national parks," reads the Natural Resources, Adelaide website which announced the award.
"The State government has allocated $10.4m for parks projects. So some of the ideas you brainstorm in class could be used."
The only rule is that "whatever you design needs to be able to be made in the real world" It added.
"The park features need to be in harmony with the natural surroundings and take into account the species of animals and plants that reside there."
It suggested that ideas could include trails for bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding, barbecue and picnic areas, or something completely new."
Redesigning the slums
There is a growing trend to create ever more exciting designs in Minecraft.
The Danish government has mapped the entire country in the game as part of an educational project.
And in 2012 Mojang the creators of Minecraft collaborated with the UN to assist them in designing urban spaces in the developing world.
They recreated public spaces in the game and then shared the game with groups of the community in which participants could alter the spaces.
The project has inspired new ideas for green areas in Kiberia (the largest slum in Nairobi) and was used to create a new waterfront in Les Cayes, Haiti's largest city.
The Adelaide competition closes 12 June, and the winner will be announced one month later.
The winners will receive an excursion funded by the government to the Belair National Park.
