@Firosen: they tried that with Mario Run and they didn’t make a lot of money.

I have logged many hours playing Dr Mario on the bus and have never spent a dime. I will also log many hours playing Mario kart while taking the bus and I’m sure I will also not spend a dime.

I remember years ago I went into a GameStop. I bought a new game. The associate was pushing hard to tell me to buy the used version for 5 dollars cheaper. I said I prefer to support the game developers to which she replied “How about supporting the store”.

Needless to say I rarely buy anything at GameStop now. Used games are not worth it when subscription services are cheap and give you access to way more games. As much as I hate EA, their service is 30 dollars a year in Canada. One old NHL 19 game sells for 30 dollars at GameStop this summer. A year later they may take that game back for a couple bucks.

@valtair: Wii games were cheaper than PS3 and 360 games when they first came out. Now Switch games are almost never discounted and are just as expensive if not more, especially for the older remakes.

The subscription service is also a joke with old NES games (where are the SNES and N64 or GameCube games). Tons of GameCube games that are still playable today that many missed out on because nobody had a GameCube that gen.

At least with a PS4 I can just subscribe to PSNow with or without Plus and will hold me over such that I rarely buy games now.

So basically 75 bucks for 2-2.5 more hours of playtime. What a deal (not)

@vtp19: as far as I remember, games still cost 60 bucks when they first come out. This has been the case since at least the days of the Wii (Wii games used to be 50 bucks), PS3 and Xbox 360, around 2006. Thirteen years and the price of the base games, new releases still has not gone up. The only way they make money is through additional DLC and MTX. Based on inflation alone, those new releases should cost around 76 dollars in 2019 money.

@lorddaggeroff: I think the point is they want every member of the family to have a switch. Buying 1 main switch console and 2 or 3 other portable devices at 200 each is more palatable than buying 2 or 3 at full price and not needing the feature of plugging it in to the tv.

@xantufrog: played DQ XI on the PS4 and it’s a long grind.

Playing Tetris 99 now and it’s amazingly addictive.

@BigJerm1: NES games are now portable (I get that you could access these games on 3ds but not online play). 20 bucks to access all that on the go is not unreasonable. If they throw in SNES and N64 games that would be a great deal.

As someone said below, it’s time and practice. Seriously, I game but in my late 30s, with a family to support and as a doctor, I just don’t have the time to practice and get good at games. There’s some raw talent needed, I’m sure, but when It takes me 4 months to get good at and beat an 80 hour game, I don’t have time for much else. As for most, gaming is and always has been a hobby. I decided a long time ago that I would rather spend my time on things that can actually make me money and that I’m good it, that is in being a doctor and investing.
