1) As a business model it's completely open to corruption. See Capcom as a prime example. There's no way they don't intentionally hold back elements to boost profit.
2) It starts a bad precedent. How can the customer tell if what they're being asked to buy is genuine value content made after production or a held back cash in?
I'd feel more than a little naive putting my trust in this kind of practice.
