This is precisely where Sonic the Hedgehog failed my expectations when it first came out... and has continued to do so ever since. You have to give the player a reasonable amount of foresight in order to allow the reflexes to do their part. Had Sonic first come out on a console capable of fully 3D environments and put an emphasis on draw distance and high frame rate (F-Zero X on N64 comes to mind), the sense of speed would have been more frequent and more satisfying because you could plan your moves several steps in advance. Even in a 2D side-scroller it is possible to provide this foresight. You just need to implement a mechanic that either zooms the screen out as you go faster, or it needs to give you cues as to what obstacles are approaching, like the flashing hurdles in Battle Toads on NES.
I'm still waiting for a really satisfying Sonic game. The concept still has untapped potential, as is evident in games like Mirror's Edge.
@sebbysebbseb: Haha :D I'm feeling more articulate already! However, I maintain the argument that using and knowing are two different things and there is a time and a place for the former. This is not it.
@Qixote: Thank you! I thought I was alone. What's with the F-bombs??? I don't care where you come from or what philosophy of journalism you subscribe to, this is a video game website and A) children come here to get news and tips about gaming and B) swearing makes you look 100% less intelligent 100% of the time. So unnecessary and hugely disappointing. Man-boys use the f-word like it's the only adjective they know. Men only use it when they lose a limb. Evolve, Gamespot.
Hahahahaha :D YES!!! Way to go Gamespot. I think you should have actually taken a WHOLE MINUTE to sip that cafe, just to put some lemon on that burn. I get that video games are an all ages thing, but GTAV IS NOT!! So... why the diaper rash, gaming friends? As I said on the GTAV review page, grow the $%#@ up.
RE: Zimmerman verdict Step 1: Google search, "a few questions for those upset by the zimmerman verdict" Step 2: Read Step 3: Get over it. This obsessive race debate is not helping anyone, least of all Zimmerman and Treyvon's family.
RE: Castle Doctrine If you break into someone's house to steal from them or hurt them, I think you have earned whatever fate meets you on the inside. If you live in fear and think a gun will solve your problems, you need alternative help.
@antonisbob Thanks for speaking for everyone. We appreciate it. We'll be playing Mario Kart 8 in a couple of months without you. I don't think we'll notice.
