Thanks for looking through all the mods and finding the greats. And keep up the chicken work.

Thanks for revisiting this. I haven't thought about Counterstrike much in recent years because the spotlight has been taken largely by CoD and Battlefield games, but this video reminded me of earlier, but not necessarily more innocent times. As Joker said, it wasn't all sunshine and bunnies back then either.

Thanks for the article. I frequently temper my mind to avoid the hype of DLC in particular until it comes out and is reviewed. A number of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 DLC was quite over-hyped, in my opinion. That doesn't constitute "lying", but it does constitute excessive optimism.

Thanks for the article. I was born in the mid-80's and watched the gaming industry grow from a niche into the entertainment mainstay it is today. I have also watched another generation after me grow up with modern electronics, and a sense of entitlement seems to have come along with it. It isn't just about games. I feel that this younger generation feels entitled to personal choices in general, be it owning a smart phone, a certain game, fast internet connection, the right to win, the right to say what they want without much consequence, and the right to do well in school without trying hard. These are just personal feelings on what I have seen in my years at a university.

Case in point: Earth Defense Force 2017. Extremely shallow, but with a friend it is oh so much silly fun to shoot absurd weapons at giant alien bugs and their ships and their giant robots.

I am glad that someone form a big game website like Gamespot cared enough to write about this. In addition to these qualities, I think that a single protagonist, and not a collective villain, is necessary because, although not realistic, it gives a face to our enemy and gives us a goal for which to strive ( I must beat this man). I think that Saren and Sovereign from Mass Effect could be added to this list. Both had presence, Saren had motive, and Sovereign had mystery. The collectors were a collective villain and thus not quite as cool for me. The Emperor from Star Wars Episode VI. He was evil, mysterious, had motive, and lots of presence. Favorite villain: Grahf from Xenogears, hands down. "My fist is the divine breath! Blossom, o fallen seed, and draw upon thy hidden powers!! Grant unto thee the power of the glorious 'Mother of Destruction'!"

I get the impression from this article that the unhappy workers are like skaa working under an oppressive nobility (read businessmen), except that they get paid. They are still let go seemingly at random, but they are paid.

One the other end of the spectrum, in my opinion, is Start Ocean: Till the End of Time, which had excellent sound tracks, fast and superbly executed gameplay, a specialized art style that was beautiful in its own way, and an intriguing story that looked good on paper. It was horribly executed though because the characters looked like dolls, were badly scripted, and had horrendous voice acting that made me try very hard to quiet the voices that told me to stab. That game was an example of poor implementation of quality parts. In particular, the first stage of the final boss fight was...light jazz. That still confuses me.

FFX is one of my favorite games because of the music application and is only surpassed (in my opinion) by Xenogears for the playstation. Although old, the soundtrack is still incredible because the quality wasn't reduced, or at least not by much, to save space on the disks. I recently re-listened to the OST, and I was surprised at the music variation between the tracks. While listening to the tracks, I remembered that there was plenty of aptly applied silence throughout the story, which made certain tracks heighten the sense of urgency that followed the silence. I also liked that certain sound tracks would override the default battle music and not skip a beat when a random battle started, progressed, and ended, such as one of the urgent sound tracks that made you feel like you had to hurry. This mechanic ensured the continuity of feeling that the developers wanted the player to feel. My favorite quote about music is from that game: “Music is a mysterious thing... Sometimes, it makes people remember things that they do not expect. Many thoughts, feelings, memories... things almost forgotten... Regardless of whether the listener desires to remember them or not...” -Citan
