[QUOTE="3picuri3"][QUOTE="yoyo462001"][QUOTE="3picuri3"] from what i've heard it isn't exaggerated. passports are taken on arrival. contracts are not upheld. they are forced to stay far longer than agreed, sometimes in measures of years. 20 people live in one room. payment is a fraction of what was promised. do you ever speak to the workers? i have a friend that has lived there for 4-5 years now working for a sheik and he says this is common knowledge in Dubai. he's been there and spoken to some of the workers - but there's nothing you can do for them. without their passports they can't even prove their identity to get help from their countries consulates. can't leave. how is that not slavery?

nope havn't spoken to any workers due to the language barrier, i must admit i didnt know it was that bad and im not just like any other tourist in the 5 star hotel, my dads apartments in a residential area close to the market and everything. i think its appalling, not quite slavery yet but its bad, with the recent slow in demand of oil i can imagine it will only get worse for them now. Not knowing the extent makes me feel bad since ive been going there so much.

Amnesty International estimates there are 300,000 foreign workers in Dubai under similar circumstances. you are right it isn't flat-out slavery, but even the Egyptians fed and treated their slaves well - so one could argue that anyone that works against their will is a slave regardless of how humanely they are treated, or if wages are given. you shouldn't feel bad about not knowing. they do a good job in Dubai of censoring bad press. as we mentioned earlier in this thread they're making it illegal for local news agencies to publish anything about the faltering economy :| and that's not nearly as sensitive as the claims Amnesty has made about the foreign workers. it's a beautiful place, but a lot of the wealthy people that run the show have a lot of work to do when it comes to their humanity :).

Stop making it sound so serious, it isn't. Violating human rights? where is that...? I've been there countless times and it isn't slavery at all. I have talked to workers there and they said they are leading better lives than they could have led in their native countries. I speak Arabic and I know a lot more about Dubai than you probably do due to the fact that I came from a very similar environment, my driver and my maid both come from eastren asia and India, and they ALSO said that they are leading better lives here. When interviewed, it's pretty natural for workers to imply that they are not content about their circumstances because there is a chance that someone responsible might listen and try to improve the situation. So, exaggeration is usually present in such documentaries that's why they could be never taken as a reliable source. I've seen ghettos and countless workers under worse circumstances are in The U.S, France,Brazil,Egypt....etc..

[QUOTE="LosDaddie"]

:lol: ......Dubai is shell of its former self.

With the world's economies crashing, everybody finally realizes what a horrible idea Dubia was.

Famiking

Dubai was only recently caught with all the economic crisis. It was all going great, the Gulf was the only recession-proof region - until the oil crash. Thankfully, most other gulf countries weren't hit as hard because we didn't spend our money like crazy mad.

Yes, Dubai is caught in the economic crisis as well, the last time I've been there I noticed that the population of the city has declined sharply due to the immense number of layoffs.
